2nd time around

First I want to say how relieved I am to find this website and forum. I was starting to feel alone in this.

Let me tell a little bit of my story before I ask my question:

In 1996, after going about 5 years without a pap, I felt the need to have a checkup. I had a pap in December. It came back abnormal. I was sent to a gynocologist for a 2nd opinion. The gyno reviewed my pap results and was told I had Carcinoma In Situ (whatever that was). He did a colposcopy and a LEEP cone biopsy in January 1997. The margins were clear so I was put on every three month paps. After the first normal one I was put on every 6 months. After another clear one I was put on yearly.

It has now been 5 years since my LEEP and I had a pap 10 days ago. During the pap the Dr said my cervix was irritated and that he saw leisions. We discussed the possibility of needing a LAVH. He said that after the results of the pap were in he would need to do a biopsy to determine how aggressivly he needed to treat my problem. Today I got the results of my pap. It came back normal. Now I am really confused. My Dr. talked like he was sure my CIS was back but the results were normal. He said to ease my mind he would do a biopsy next week. I am really confused and scared. Does anyone have any suggestions or words of wisdom?

Hu Terri, welcome to cancer concerns , I am so glad that you posted. You dont ever have to feel alone, we are always here for you

First of all.... not all abnormal pap results are cancer. Sometimes a pap smear will show signs of inflammation which means that the cells of the cervix are slightly irritated. This can be due to an infection or thrush. A repeat pap is usually done about 6 mths later, depending on the Dr.

Your Dr. seems to be quiet sensible in doing a biopsy at least that will show if there is any CIS ( carcinoma in situ ) and you can go from there. If you are not happy then, you can always get a 2nd opinion.

Please let us know how it all goes, sending you lots of HUGS x x x
