Let's talk turkey.....

I couldn't resist posting this thread about how very THANKFUL I am that I have health insurance. Living in Southern California, I have been become accustomed to sky high prices for everything but my jaw had to be peeled off the floor when I saw the charges for my overnight surgery
Cost without. having insurance:

Hospital. 70,289.00
Surgeon. 9585.00
Anesthesia dr. 3051.00
Pathology. 2748.00
Consults 1352.00

Total. 87025.00

My cost $ 3,000.00 out of pocket

I am thankful for our insurance!

Re: Let's talk turkey.....

Those of us with insurance are truly blessed! Yes, I am a senior and have medicare and I also am sooooo thankful for the insurance that I have. (I have yet to see the 'bill' but am sure it will blow my mind).
I am also very, very thankful for my surgeon and the knowledge and skill that God has given her.
I am very, very thankful that I seemed to have healed without any issues.
I am very, very, very thankful that my biopsy came back clear.
And needless to say, I am thankful for all my sisters on this site that have posted their experiences and helped me get thru the pre-op and the post-op days that were full of questions!!!
Happy Turkey day to all.

It's crazy, isn't it? My total, so far, is around $90k. Our out of pocket is at $466.16. I'm still waiting to see the claims show up from my doctor.

It is a laugh, that's for sure.

Re: Let's talk turkey.....

Mine so far is $340,000 before the insurance plan discount.
This is all for more than a regular surgery. TAH in hospital 4 days total, day and a half in ICU, then semi private cardiac room. Echocardiogram, angiogram. Thankfully I only had to pay a couple hundred dollars. Crazy though.

Re: Let's talk turkey.....

I have to file bankruptcy because of my medical bills - over $100,000 (almost the same price as my loans for school!). I just this year received insurance from the Marketplace and it has saved my life more than once; I keep hearing complaints about Obamacare and I can't understand because it has made it possible for me to receive direly needed healthcare. Without insurance, I don't even know how I'd be able to get chronic healthcare or medicines, except by going into debt like I did before. I am under 65 and have a college education, and that has been the reason I can't get Medicaid or Disability even though I'm way over-qualified to get both. I hate filing bankruptcy, but I have no choice.

Hey Caradia,
Medical bills are challenging. So sorry to hear about your bankruptcy. I guess having good health just can't compare to any amount of material possessions in the long run.

Thanks for sharing.
