Has anyone tried Xanax or Ativan?

I think I'm going to ask my doctor for a prescription of one of these drugs. I am very nervous about having surgery and definately feel I would benefit from having something to clam my nerves a bit. I want to hear experiences from any of you who have taken one of these drugs. Did they help calm your nerves? What side effects did you have? I haven't talked to my doctor yet, I still have several weeks before my surgery, but I want to know about these drugs before I talk to him. My friend's husband is a pharmacist and did say that I can't drive while taking these drugs.

Has anyone tried Xanax or Ativan?

I have had Xanax, and can vouch for its effectiveness. My prescribed dose was 2 pills every 4-6 hours (but the Dr said only to use them when necessary). Instead of taking 2 pills, tho, I would get relief from 1/2 of one pill. While I don't think it would be a good idea to drive on a full dose, I had no problem on my 1/2 of one dose. It can be addictive, but I'm sure your nerves will be fine after your surgery.

Best of luck to you!

Has anyone tried Xanax or Ativan?

Hi, I had to do a bowel prep and I was afraid of getting nausea. So, they gave me some anti-nausea pills. My "A" man said I could eat and drink up to the stroke of midnight. Unfortunately my surgeon told me nothing but liquids after 1 p.m. I took the pill before I went to bed and it relaxed me...made me kinda sleepy, was easy to relax and fall asleep.

Has anyone tried Xanax or Ativan?

I took it one week pre op and it worked GREAT. How you feel before will effect how you feel after. If you are more relaxed and you need this, do it. I never took them before in my life but did for this. I cut them in half and functioned well. Took the edge off, calmed me down, made me feel better.

Best of luck to you, I'm 8 days post op and feeling incredible!!!!!!!

Has anyone tried Xanax or Ativan?

My doc told me I could take Xanax the night before to sleep and also told me to take one in the morning. It did seem to interact with the anesthesia and pain meds. I felt disconnected from myself (i.e., my voice seemed to be coming from outside of my body). It was scary, but I knew what it was. I had the nurse stop the continuous flow of pain meds (a major feat. She didn't want to do this.) The next morning I was fine.

xanax

I had been prescribed xanax off and on for several years for "panic attacks" which turned out to be SVT but that's a whole different story. Anyway my doctor prescribed .25mg and I took them only whenever I felt on the edge. I actually cut the pill in half and then half again, basically into quarters. I would take 1/4 and then if i didn't feel better in 15 minutes would take another 1/4. I never had to take more than 1/2 of a total pill. I never had problems driving after I took one. A psychologist friend told me that for as little dosage I took, I would never get addicted to them.

I didn't have any problems taking them and this is from someone who hates taking pills of any kind and if someone's going to have a reaction, it would be me.

Has anyone tried Xanax or Ativan?

I took Xanax the week before my surgery. And I also cut my dose to 1/2 a pill...it worked VERY well. Didn't alter me at all, and I was fine to drive. I NEVER take anything, but I really felt I needed some help with the anxiety, and I was very happy that I took my dr. up on his offer.

It just takes the edge off...I highly recommend it. I was able to take a 1/2 the morning of my surgery, too. You won't need it after that....it will all be behind you! Go for it, you won't be sorry. We all need a helping hand during this difficult time!

Has anyone tried Xanax or Ativan?

Thanks everyone! I will definately talk to my doctor about getting a prescription before my surgery. It also sounds like alot of you are in agreement that 1/2 a pill worked good, so I'll probably start off with just that. I don't like that drugged feeling. I get that with Vicodin, so I usually just take 1/2 at a time and it usually works. Thanks again
