pain management 6 days post op (TAH) Total Abdominal Hysterectomy

What to take for pain for those who dont do well with narcotics. I thought tylenol and alleve was the answer. Had a very awesome day sunday. Not so much now. I already flushed the Percocets down the toilet after taking only one since being home from hospital. Yukk.

I have a vertical incision from above my belly button down to my pubic bone. Staples come out on Friday.

I only took the Percocet the first 3 nights I was home to help with sleep. The third night was pretty nasty so I didn't take any more. I did take 800 mg ibuprofen 3 times a day for a month (doctor prescribed it). My pain wasn't bad and I was able to manage it with the ibuprofen.

Tylonal 3 might be good to use. It has the codeine and caffeine . You need a script for it though.
Or tylonal 1 without a script. ( not much codeine in it).

Re: pain management 6 days post op (TAH) Total Abdominal Hysterectomy

FYI Tylenol #3 is codeine and Tylenol (acetaminophen). There is no caffeine in it.

You might want to try alternating regular Tylenol with ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil). I would avoid Naproxen (Alleve) because it can cause water retention. Ibuprofen and Naproxen are both nsaids (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) and they address both pain AND inflammation, which is likely why your doctor prescribed 800mg Motrin after your surgery in addition to the Percocet. Personally I think 800 mg Motrin every 6 hours is overkill.

I only took my Percocet up until the second day post op. I then was able to manage both pain and inflammation with 400 mg ibuprofen (generic, Motrin or Advil) every 6 hours and if I felt uncomfortable after 4 hours I added two regular Tylenol.

Also for anyone taking Motrin (ibuprofen, Advil) around the clock, I would strongly recommend also protecting your stomach by taking Pepcid 20mg daily.

Of, course, you might want to run any of this by your own doctor, I am not suggesting that you divert from your own doctor's orders without speaking to him/her because your doctor should know your medical history and may have reasons to suggest a different regime.

Re: pain management 6 days post op (TAH) Total Abdominal Hysterectomy

I wasn't able to take my narcotics with my laparoscopy last November so I took ibuprofen 600mg only. My Dr prescribed hydrocodone-acetaminophen 5-325 again and this time I'm able to take them. I may be wrong but this is one step less than Percocet. Maybe Percocet is too strong for you? Ask for a different pain med from your Dr?

That is right. Tylenol 1 has the caffeine in it with the codeine and
Acetaminophen and not the Tylenol 3.
