2+ months post hysterectomy: How soon do the ovaries wake up
I had surgery 1/14/15 my left ovary removed and my right one still in place. I'm wondering how soon will it wake up and function. I'm in peri-menopause and I'm having trouble feeling balance. I'm also beginning to have terrible headaches. Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 2+ months post hysterectomy: How soon do the ovaries wake up
There is no definite time for that. I have both ovaries, am 32, 3 months post op and they still show no sign of balancing themselves. I'll wait a month or two and then will check my hormones and consult the Dr.

Re: 2+ months post hysterectomy: How soon do the ovaries wake up
Hi and sorry you are going through that. The answer is that it is different for everyone. Some women have no problem/delay, others, like you, do have some delay.
A hysterectomy causes trauma to the ovaries. The main blood supply for the ovaries is the uterine artery, which has to be cut to remove the uterus. The secondary blood supply for the ovaries is the ovarian artery.
Cutting the main blood supply can be a shock to that organ, and can cause interruption to its function. Generally, the interruption is temporary.
Most women find that their bodies adapt to using the secondary blood supply fine, and the ovaries should start back to normal function soon. However, I believe that the research shows that even if they work fine for while, a women may experience earlier ovarian death then if she had not had a hysterectomy, due to the possibly compromised blood supply.

For me, it was about 4 months. Currently, I'm about a year and a half out, and I feel fine.
