Anyone else have Urinary Retention?

Hi girls:
One of my biggest complaints is urinary retention and back pain. I'm having my surgery on May 8. Anyone else experience urinary retention...and if so, was it helped with the hyst?
Thanks for your replies.

Anyone else have Urinary Retention?

Hi Mary Lou!

What do you mean by urinary retention? Like, having to 'push' to finish emptying the bladder? Yeah.....I got that.

Hoping the hyster helps (the fibroid & uterus are putting pressure/pinching the bladder). The first gyn showed me how I can stand on my head then sit back down to empty it.......kidding - a little.

We're getting a second opinion.......................... (check out 'sniff sniff' & 'found' posts for details)

What does YOUR doc say about it? My second opinion is on Tuesday. We'll see if he has me standing on my head too!

Anyone else have Urinary Retention?

Hi Marylou:

I am also interested in an answer to your question. I also have urinary retention to the point I have had so many bladder / kidney infections I can't count them anymore. I am currently on cipro. My surgery is in June, I am also concerned about whether fixing my prolapsed uterous and prolapsed bladder will solve the problem. I haven't tried standing on my head yet, I think I will need a raincoat to try that tactic.

Anyone else have Urinary Retention?

Hi Marylou:
I have HORRIBLE back pain--worse when its that time of the month(LAST ONE)
I also have the urge to go to the bathroom all the time--seems like as soon as I go in about 15 min I got to go again.
I think my prolapsed uterus is resting on the bladder (which is being tacked back up) that is does not empty all the way.
My Dr. told me he is almost certain that these problems should go away after the hyst.
Counting down 11 more days!
Take care

Anyone else have Urinary Retention?

Hi Girls:
What I mean by urinary retention is that I have episodes where I absolutely cannot urniate. The urge is there but nothing happens. This can go on for hours at a time, until there is so much urine in the bladder that you literally think you are going to explode. Most of the time, I am eventually able to urinate on my own, but had one episode where I had to go to the ER to have a catheter put in to drain the urine. They drained 1000 cc (about 1 litre). Your bladder normally holds around 200/300 cc so you can imagine the pain.
I wish you all luck!

Anyone else have Urinary Retention?

Marylou,
If you haven't mentioned this to your dr you may need to see a urologist before surgery (I did) to find out about why this has happened or your surgery could be postponed. You don't want to find out after surgery that you need more additional surgery to repair something that should have been found or mentioned prior to surgery. Good luck.
