In light of the recent threats and attacks of nasty worms and viruses, here are some points to keep in mind and take seriously.

It’s possible to get infected just by going to a malicious website (a site that has been infected). The Hystersisters site server is UNIX based; therefore it’s not possible for it to be a malicious site. These viruses and worms are Windows based, not UNIX. It’s not capable of distributing these beasts.

Recently, spammers have infiltrated the server and used our email client to ‘disguise itself’ in sending spam that looks like it came from the site. It is the intention of these cyber-creeps to just use the server for alias purposes; rarely if ever would they bother grabbing email address books or info from it. And, again, it was annoying but harmless spam, and not viruses or worms.

Klez virus facts:

- Klez will pick out 2 email addresses from your address book, randomly, and use one of them as the TO: and the other as the FROM: so it is nearly impossible for anyone to know where the worm really came from.

- Klez can also use addresses that are found somewhere on the infected computer, i.e., ICQ database, text files, and html files.

- W32/[email protected] masquerades as a free immunity tool in at least one of the messages used. In other words, if you receive an email that indicates it will protect you from Klez, it’s a hoax and probably the virus in disguise.

- Klez aliases: W32/[email protected] (Norman), W32/[email protected], W32/Klez.I (Panda), W32/Klez.K-mm, WORM_KLEZ.G (Trend)

Furthermore, it has become necessary for all of us to change the way we use the internet and email in order to protect our computers.

I think we’re all understanding the importance of doing the following:

- DO NOT enable your email preview pane. Much of the time, this is enabled by default, so you MUST go in to your Tools… Options… to DISable this function!

- DO NOT delete any message that is in full view. This will cause the next message in your inbox to automatically open.

- DO NOT open anything from anyone that looks the least bit suspicious. You can look at the properties, and message source to take a peek, but if you’re suspicious in the first place, just delete it.

- DO NOT open, read, and forward these chain emails that are rampant. Delete them. Worms and viruses like to travel this way.

- YOU MUST update your virus definitions on a regular basis. Right now it should be at least once a week. These creeps are hard at work with nothing better to do than to sit around all day and write malicious code and try to outdo each other with the most damage.

- YOU MUST scan ALL FILES AND FOLDERS (not just program files) – this takes a lot longer, but at this time of heightened security alert, it’s worth the extra few minutes.

- BEFORE OPENING AN EMAIL, get into the habit of LOOKING at the list of recipients. If you see anything weird in the TO: listing, (ex: *virus-trap) DELETE IT. Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200.

- SET UP a dummy address in your address book, called *virus-trap with an email address of [email protected] This way, if a worm finds its way to you, it will first try to send to the *virus-trap address (because it’s first on the list by virtue of the asterisk) and will alert you that it was undeliverable, AND if it does make its way to the remainder of your contacts, the previous step will hopefully keep your unsuspecting recipients from opening it.

- When visiting a website that asks you for your email address, and you don’t feel 100% comfortable doing that, either use an email address that is not from your service provider, for example, yahoo or hotmail – and not your POP3 account OR make one up. So many sites just do this so they can sell your address to others.

- DO NOT click on the link at the bottom of an unwanted/unsolicited email that indicates ‘unsubscribe’. In most cases this is a ploy. By following the ‘unsubscribe’ directions, you’re confirming that the address they’ve sent the spam to is a valid one, thus encouraging them to continue spamming and also to sell your address to others.

- If you know how, BLOCK any attachments from your email with the following extensions:

This means if someone really needs to send you a program, they’ll need to zip it first, so that you’ll be receiving a .zip file instead of an .exe file. This does not mean that any zip file is okay - ! You still have to be careful with this or any attachment!!

I sincerely hope that this helps; if you have been infected with anything, go to your Antivirus program’s website (or you can go to if you don’t have a program, but do consider making this investment – it sure beats having to wipe your hard drive and reinstall your operating system!) and follow the instructions they provide on how to get rid of the infection.

If I can help explain any of this further, feel free to send me an Email or Private Message.

This one is a valid virus and is listed on the McAfee site as a 'medium risk' virus. Anytime you want to see if the chainletter you received about a virus is valid, visit and if it's on the list, delete the email and forget about it. Klez IS on the valid list, which you can also find at the McAfee site.

For the computer savvy, if you're not sure about a file, save it to your desktop and use your virus detection to scan it. Be sure you have the updated version of your detection software first.
