High blood pressure at pre-op?

Today, I went for surgery clearance. I have all new docs because I work in Balitmore but commute back and forth from Richmond. Was scheduled for TAH-BSO May 6 due to adeno, but because of insurance, switched all docs.

Today, blood pressure was 172/110. I am 43 - never had high blood pressure in my life. They immediately put me on Zocor and said that if it does not come down by Wednesday of next week, they will not operate on me 5/22.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

High blood pressure at pre-op?

I didn't have any issues with blood pressure, but I know that stress can make it skyrocket. My mom was convinced she was having a heart attack a few months ago (it was actually a buzz she got from a painkiller prescribed for arthristis.) When she got to the ER, her blood pressure was 190 over something equally outrageous. Her blood pressure doesn't normally run especially high (although it's higher now than it was when she was younger) and it came back down to her normal range pretty quickly.

The pre-op has a way of making the whole thing seem more real, so I would guess since you haven't had high blood pressure in the past, that you may have just been feeling some stress.

I'm sure it will be down when they recheck next week.

Best wishes!

Hi, Soozn,
I didn't see you posted on the calendar for May 22? We share the same surgery date then.
I also have high blood pressure and am 45 years old. I've had it since I was 38 and am on a low dosage of meds for it. Although, I do not know exactly why yours is high now I can tell you that when I go to the doctors it is always higher. My GP tells me I have" white coat syndrome".....meaning it raises with anxiety.
Take the meds and relax. Watch your diet this week and take some regular walks if you can.
I suspect mine will be up also when I go for pre-op May 20.

I will cross my fingers for you and think positive,

Best wishes,

High blood pressure at pre-op?

Hi Soozn,

Please change your surgery date in your profile as we want to make sure to have enough brownies and tea on the post-op side! I think you just have to put in the year, in yours!

I had high blood pressure at all of my appts. But, I really have low blood pressure normally. I told them that and they made me lay down and relax and then took it again. Maybe they could do this for you??

I am another White Coat syndrome girl my blood pressure always raised when someone puts a cuff on my arm. I would take my blood pressure regularily at the pharmacy and write it down. It was always lower when I had no pressure. Then show that to Doc.

I had high blood pressure going into surgery. All went well. RELAX. You need to relax and think of something else.

Take care

You are going to do great!

High blood pressure at pre-op?

Oh I'm so glad I am not alone!
That me --see white coat--pressure goes up!
Dr. had me watch it at home for 2 weeks--was fine.
I told him the only time it is up wheni come to see you!
Actually my bp has never been up at gyn --only general FUNNY!
Well I am off to pre op on a hour so I am sure it will be up.
Good luck to you all!

high bp

Mine used to be up in those numbers.. There are a few things you can do about it as well.
1. drink lots of water
2. sleep (full nights, darnit!)
3. take it easy on salt, and cut it out if you can

Ask them to retake your bp 10-15 minutes into your appointment and show them that it knows how to calm down, the first few minutes are always the worst!!

s to you, you'll do fine!!
