Fear of hormones

It could be that I'm just diverting my attention from the operation itself, but my anxieties are all centered on HRT. I am having my ovaries taken out and know I will be on HRT afterwards. I really fear it. Although there are things I do not like about my body - lack of energy, prolonged periods, lack of concentration - there are many things I do like. I have a decent metabolism, comparatively few grey hairs or wrinkles for my age 46, and a calm outlook on life. I am afraid that all this will change, and that I will be unable to find myself again. I had always intended to go through menopause without hormones. Actually, I had a positive feeling about it - finally to be warm for once in my life, lol - but now I am afraid it will be months and months of experimentation, not sure whether something is out of whack, not having specific symptoms to relate to the doctor, not having the right doctor - mine is more a surgeon type - and running back to the doctor's office every couple of weeks.

I just want to have the surgery and then concentrate on getting strong again.

Sorry to spill this out, but these are what my fears are about.

Yes, less than two weeks ... just picked up 5 packages of cat litter and a summer's worth of birdseed for my pet bird. I need to stock quite a bit more!

Hormone fears

Pellice.
I too am scard about the hormones. I don't want to come home as a raging maniac! LOL It's bad enough when I have PMS. I really hope we both get through the jungle with minimal effort. Have you checked out the hormone jungle yet? Take care. Not long now!

Fear of hormones

I can see where you are coming from. I am supposed to keep my ovaries. But, I have made it very clear that I have no intention of taking hormones if my doc does end up taking them.

The negatives are far too great for my comfort.

Keep doing your research and stick to your guns. Your body, your life, your decision.

Take care

Pellice, you and I are the same age! I had my TAH/BSO on April 4 and started on Estratest. So far, so good! I hope your surgery and HRT goes as well.

I'm scared too!

I am with you guys. I am scared to death of what is going to happen to my body and mind on HRT. But a few people I know are on HRT and they have absolutely no problems, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be one of the lucky ones and do great right from the start.

Good Luck to you all.

scared, too!

I keep having dreams at night about HRT and I wake up feeling disturbed because it isn't going well.

I cry about it off and on when I start feeling really stressed-out about this surgery. My dr is going to have me go through induced menopause by using Lupron after the surgery and then he is going to start me on estrogens. I am SCARED that I am not going to be the same person. I am scared that I will have an even worse personality than my stressed-out and PMS-ing self already has. I am SCARED, period!!

I have visions of my hair falling out, too. I lost a bunch of hair after my dd was born and it never grew back in. My hair was pretty thin, to begin with, so if I lose any more, I'll be bald!

Will this happen with HRT? Does anybody know??? I have heard that it does.

Everybody...breathe!!!

Yes, it's true that some women have a difficult time finding the right HRT balance. But PLEASE don't assume that you will be one of them. I had TAH/BSO just over a year ago...started Premarin on the fifth day after surgery. I am very pleased to tell you that I have not had one single problem with it. No flashes, no depression, no sweats, I'm still me, my skin looks GREAT, my hair never looked better, I went up a cup size (finally...puberty at 45!), and I didn't gain weight. Plus, I have the additional peace of mind that comes from knowing my bones, heart and body are getting some stuff they need.

If it makes you feel any better, my mother had a hyst at age 37...she's been on a very low dose of Premarin since then. She just turned 70...and she's fine...looks and feels great. She could be the poster child for HRT.

Of course it's possible that you may have to try more than one type of HRT, but please don't blow it out of proportion! Talk to your doctor about it, and make a plan A and plan B. Then try to keep all of it in perspective.

s to you!!!

Fear of hormones

Thanks Karen and everyone - I know a couple of people on Premarin who are doing well ... I'll try to think positive. I really don't like taking pills!

HRT-- do the reading!

Hi all,

I'm facing HRT as well, and I can't stress enough how much better my research has made me feel about this. You should stop by the Hormone Jungle on this site. There are excellent pull down menus, and lots of fantastic women who will share their experiences and give support.

You also might want to take a look at
http://www.geocities.com/NoLinks/index.htm
A survivor's guide to Surgical menopause. The site has a ton of information, and is very realistic about the pros and cons of HRT.

I've also found many helpful journal articals and citations at www.medscape.com some of these are very technical, but you can usually sift through the verbiage to get to the good stuff. And a Google search tuns up plenty, just get ready to sift!

There are a lot of stongly biased materials out there, it can be hard to find "neutral" stuff, but it is there, and should help *you* make an informed decision.

Happy trekking through the jungle

Karen and Chris

Thank yo so much for the positive look at HRT. My Mom also had TAH-BSO when she was 37. Premarin was great for years but she started having some hot flashes and was switched to Cenestin. I know this sounds irrational, but I am allergic to so many pain meds <terrifies me following surgery> that i guess I am concerned that I may the same problem with the HRT! My hubby keeps reassuring me and saying, "Babe, PLEASE don't worry about things until or if they actually happen." I guess he is right. Thanks ladies!
