Fear of hormones

Hi, Nette! That's good you've gotten an appt to talk to your dr about all your tests and questions. Sometimes we patients have to be persistent and not wait for the dr office to call us! You can ask your dr his thoughts on HRT also when you go in.

Researchers are doing long-term studies now to try to determine if it is safe to take HRT for more than 5 years. I certainly hope those studies will be positive, because I like how I feel and look on Estrace. I would like to be one of those ladies still taking estrogen at age 80! But there are some studies that indicate an increased risk of breast cancer for those taking estrogen over 5 years. It is more important than ever to do monthly self breast exams and get a yearly mammogram when on HRT. The estrogen stimulates breast growth, making the breasts more dense. Some doctors think the estrogen does not "cause" breast cancer--that the genetics of the woman are what causes it to grow--but estrogen may speed up the timeline of developing cancer cells. So doctors are of different opinions about how long a woman can take estrogen, and some think we should only take it to get through the process of menopause. It will be a little depressing if I have to stop completely in another 4 years. I do hope that the studies will show it is safe (at least for low-dose estrogen) to take it indefinitely. s and best wishes!

P.S. Yes, I've seen the Patti LaBelle and Lauren Hutton commercials for HRT !

Fear of hormones

Gee, it's nice that they're doing "long-term" studies NOW, since my mom's been on HRT for 33 years.

Interestingly, Premarin is one of the most prescribed pharmaceuticals in the world. You'd think by now they'd have DONE the studies?!?!?!?!?!?

I will go by what my doctor tells me, what I read, and my mother's experience...somewhere in there is the right answer. But I have no intentions of stopping HRT unless someone gives me a mighty good reason, beyond the "flavor of the month" study results.

This is a great thread, btw!!!!!

Studies

Yes, Women's Health issues do seem to get short shift.... but here are a couple of studies that have been done of interest... the PEPI study and the HERS study are 2 I've seen mentioned in the literature searches I've been doing. HERS studied heart health and estrogen. I have a citation somewhere for PEPI, it was in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association).

The Women's Health Initiative (WIH) is going on as we type. I think the NIH is the main agency running that. It loooks like it's going to be a huge, important study.

A google search will net you plenty of information about these studies (and many others)

Happy reading on the road!
