vaginal bleeding post vaginal hysterectomy

I had a TVH on May 1st, I have been feeling good, only I have had a few days of bright red bleeding, which the Dr. told me was a warning sign and to call if it happens, well I called last week, when it started and today, and they feel it is o.k. to wait until my follow up appointment on thursday, as long as it is not very heavy bleeding (at this point it is only some spotting, only needing a pantiliner), I was wondering if anyone else out there had this problem after their TVH, and is it fairly normal?

Hi Reenie

I had a TAH, not a TVH. I had a little discharge. I think it's normal as long as it's not a lot, if it gets heavier I would call again.

I'm sure someone who had a TVH will be along who can reassure you.

Hi, Reenie! Like Mary Lou, I also had a TAH. But with both kinds of hyst, as the stitches start to dissolve, there can be a light bloody discharge and it can last for several weeks. I think I recall some hystersisters who still had spotting at 6 weeks post op. As long as the discharge is not becoming heavier, I think your dr office was ok in saying you can wait until your Thurs. appt. If you start having increasing pain or heavy bleeding, however, call your dr right away. s

Hi Reenie,
I had a TVA and am now just under three weeks post op. I started to have a slight pinkish discharge, which has now turned dark brownish. Its not much at all. From others it seems it is quite normal, due to internal stitches which are dissolving and leaving our bodies to cope with the rest of the healing process. As long as you take things easy and the discharge does not become heavy, or bright red with clots, I was told that it was o.k. Also remember to tell your Dr if your discharge starts to smell offensive as you could have an infection.
It can be quite upsetting when you get a discharge, I know, I paniced :alarm: when mine appeared because I had not had any since the fourth day, then all of a sudden around the two week mark it appeared. Atomatically I thought I had done something wrong, the ladies here helped me and explained the above to me, I read the lit which I came home with from cover to cover and realised they were right. Even so keep in touch with your Dr. to put your mind at rest.

Best wishes
