Upcoming abdominal hysterectomy 10/7: Should I use an abdominal binder

My pre-op appointment is tomorrow and then my surgery is on Wednesday and I'm trying to go over everything I need to have ready before the big day. Should I get an abdominal binder? Does it help the muscles heal after surgery, swelly belly or it just a comfort thing? The hospital I'm having my hysterectomy in is the same one I had my c section in so if they didn't offer an abdominal binder after my c section does that mean that won't offer me one now? Before I go out and buy one I wanted to know if it really was helpful for most women or if it helps some but not others

Re: Should I use an abdominal binder

I tried one but it dug into my vertical incision when I sat. I have a short body so I figure that is why. It felt great when I walked as it held everything in and made the pain go away. I used it for a month. I just found that the one on this site was too wide for me.

Re: Should I use an abdominal binder

Pretty sure it's a comfort thing. My doctor's PA came by my hospital room the day after my surgery, with a binder. She said it would help to not feel like everything's hanging out and loose. It definitely helped. It was too big, though, it came up too high. I only wore it for a little over a day. I may have worn it longer if it was the right size for me.
I don't recall my doctor saying anything about the binder.

I bought one from here because everyone was saying they lived them, but I never used it once. Didn't like it and felt fine without it. On the occasions early on where I was going to be extra active all day, I wore support underwear.

Re: Should I use an abdominal binder

I never bought one, was never offered one and never wanted one. It's really a comfort thing rather than a medical thing. In fact, some doctors advise against them on the grounds that it's better to encourage the muscles to do at least a bit of work.

Thank y'all! I'll ask my doctor what he thinks today and if he doesn't recommend it I won't spend the money on one

I got one from the hospital. I wore it a few times but I didn't like it at all. It felt okay while walking but lying down or sitting down it was uncomfortable. The body pillow on the other hand I had to have and glad I bought it.
