sex after a partial hystectomy

Hi,

I am scheduled to have a partial hysterectomy next week because I have adnomyosis and bladder poblems. I am very concerned that this will ruin my sex life. I recently read that it is impossible to have an orgasm without uterine contractions. Can anyone tell me if this is true to any extent?

Thanks,

Susan

sex after a partial hystectomy

Hi Susan,

I can't tell you for sure, because I'm only 2 weeks post -op and can't try for another 4 weeks, but my doctor and I had a very frank dicussion about this subject before my surgery and his answer was that my hysterectomy should not alter my sex life in any way. If I was able to have an orgasm before there was no reason I wouldn't be able to after. I kept my cervix, but ovaries and uterus have been removed.

If if helps to know my husband and I have the date when we can resume circled on the calendar and have added a sticker that says "Special Day" with a picture of Snoopy doing a little dance, so I haven't lost the desire, just that the equipment is closed for remodeling! I hope this helps reassure you that everything will be fine. Good luck with your surgery. Kathy

Take a deep breath, and remember that every person is different. Everyone's sexual response is different, too, but there are some physiologic realities that are consistent.

Many women do experience uterine contractions with orgasm. However, the clitoris is the main source of sexual response. You may have a somewhat different orgasm, and that may change, too, as you heal. Nerves are affected, nerves may take over for other nerves, sometimes nerves are damaged; there is no way to predict in advance what your experience will be.

I can tell you, though, that most women are able to have a satisfying sexual life, including orgasms, after surgery. I'd urge you to sit down with your doctor and talk this over with her/him.

Again, everyone is different, and you'll get a hundred answers if you ask a hundred people. Some people do have serious problems, some have none. But the absence of a uterus is not in and of itself the "end" of orgasms!!!!

Hope this helps a little.

sex after a partial hystectomy

I'm about 2 and a half weeks post op, and had the same concerns, as I was pretty sure that I had uterine contractions when I had an orgasm. We had oral sex a few days back, and I had a pretty good orgasm but it did feel more external than internal. Instead, it made my whole belly/ wound area ache as I got more and more turned on, and I was 'stiff' the next day. So I think that bodes well forthe return of those 'deep' orgasms when I'm more healed and having sex with penetration.

Hope this helps
