Upcoming hysterectomy 1/21: Are you awake during surgery? Hair during recovery?

Hello, I am scheduled on Jan. 21st. I have lots of questions but the one I have yet to find an answer to is are you awake for the surgery? Also, I was wondering if I should be prepared to wear my hair in a ponytail the first few days or will i be able to comb and brush it?

Re: Hair question

Hi! You will be asleep, under general anesthesia.

I washed and dried my hair the morning of my surgery (I had an 11:00 am show time) and I simply combed it the next few days. I twisted it up while I showered, but since I didn't get out of my pajamas the first 4 days, my hair didn't matter much!

Oh, good grief, no, you're not awake. One moment you're waiting for the anesthetic to take effect, the next moment you're waking up and it's all over. :-)

I had abdominal surgery with a vertical incision and had no trouble brushing my (rather short) hair the next morning. I was still in the hospital and couldn't shower, but giving it a good brushing made me feel more human.

I didn't mean for it to sound like a silly question but i read a post where someone here said the remembered being wheeled in to surgery. That raised the question in my mind. I guess I'm so nervous that I'm not thinking too straight. Thanks for your reply!

You might be awake when you're wheeled into the OR, but nothing's going to happen until after you're out. :-)

I remembered being wheeled into the o.r. and then nothing more until I was being moved
to my room. I washed my hair the morning after surgery, and the next day washed and blew it dry at home. I don't know why you wouldn't be able to do your hair, it did not bother me at all to use my arms.

No, it is not a silly question at all. This site is the place to be yourself and ask questions. I was so clueless about so many things
I personally don't remember being wheeled into surgery but some gals do. It depends upon the type of medication given to you by your Anethisologist. I have anxiety issues and am prone to panic attacks, so I was given a sedative in my IV. I really don't remember anything else until I woke up. Speak to your doctor and/or Anethisologist about what type of sedative they are planning to use.

I washed my hair right before I went into the hospital. I was there for 4 nights and it wasn't until day 2 that I felt like even brushing my teeth. Take your personal "hygiene" items and see how you feel. Go for comfort.

Hugs and we are here to support you.

Re: Are you awake during a hysterectomy? Hair during recovery?

As far as how the surgery goes - from what I understand, some hospitals do it differently. I was taken into pre-op, changed out of my clothes and into a gown. They let me keep my own socks on, because they had the little anti-slip nubbies on the bottom. I know it sounds silly, but that was a comfort to me, they were a gift from a friend. My husband was with me. The pre-op nurse asked a million questions. She took my blood pressure and temperature, and she inserted my iv. The anesthesiologist came in, and we discussed everything. I had general anesthesia and a spinal, because I wanted the most pain control possible. I was told by three of my nurse friends that the spinal would control the immediate post-op pain better. I told him I've woken up from 3 prior anesthesias vomiting, so he put an anti-nauseas sticker behind my ear and told me he would inject things into my iv to prevent that (and it worked!) my surgeon came in and talked I my husband and I. Kisses goodbye, and they wheeled me into the surgery suite. They transferred me from the gurney to the operating table. They introduced themselves. The room was cold and bright and they were efficient and kind.

And then I woke up to my husband holding my hand and kissing my forehead and it was over!
