total hysterectomy but can't go on hrt

I'm scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy on June 14th. My problem is that I will not be able to go on hormone replacement therapy and I'm only 37. I had surgery last year with every conceivable complication (pulmonary embolism, staph, septicemia, name it). I'm considered a very high risk patient, but my history with cysts, tumors, excessive bleeding or no cycle at all have left the doctors no choice but to remove everything. Oh yes...I also have polycystic ovarian syndrome. Has anyone had this done that did not go on HRT??? Can you tell me how you felt afterwards. I'm hoping that my weight will start to come off and all the other problems associated with POS will disappear. Still concerned about the side effects of menopause though. Thank you for any information or advise.

You're not alone. There is a special forum just for ladies who can't go on HRT:

No-Hormone Desert Oasis

I'm not sure if all PCOS symptoms go away with hysterectomy; I think ovaries are just part of the picture and you'll still have insulin resistance, etc. This might be a good question to ask your doctor. You can also use the search button at the top of the page to look for POS or PCOS and see other posts related to this condition.

Good luck with your surgery!

I won't be on HRT for a while, either...

I won't be taking HRT immediately after surgery, either. My dr is putting me on Lupron about a month after the hyst. I am NERVOUS about this, too. I understand that there are some natural supplements you can take that minimize the effects of menopause. A soy supplement and there is another with estra- something. (sorry I can't remember the name.) I have seen both of these at Costco. (If it's not at Costco, you don't need it.) Would these help???

I would be interested to know why I couldn't take estrogen post-op; especially if the poly-cystic ovaries are gone? Low, consistent doses would be better than wildly erratic ones, wouldn't they?

I am sorry I can't offer you info about the PSO. Have you tried a search, yet? Try that. I know I have seen other posts about it.

Good Luck and let us know what you find out! I'm sure others are out there with the same questions!

s to you!

Hi Simone

I had everything removed but I was a model patient, sorry. I know you don't want to hear that, but there are so many sisters that have had the things you are talking about so hit that hormone jungle and read. Just wanted to wish you God Bless and let you know we are here if you need us.

Hi Simone. I had a TAH/BSO three years ago and I'm not on HRT. I have an inherited blood clotting disorder and can't take estrogen. Please visit us in the No Hormone Desert Oasis.

We have no real solutions, but we try to share with each other what has worked for us.
