Upcoming hysterectomy 2/9: Post op gift ideas

I'm having TLH/Bilat. salpingectomy and endo ablation on tuesday next week.

My darling mummy wants to know what kind of get well gift she could bring me once I'm back on the ward post op or the next day.

So for you post op sisters, whats a luxury that you loved or would have loved those first few days?

Re: Post op gift ideas

Your mum sounds like a real sweetheart! :-)

Timing is everything. I had abdominal surgery and was in the hospital for three days. The first day after surgery, a friend showed up to visit with a coffee for me - except that at that point I wasn't allowed anything except water and ice chips. :-(

On the other hand, the day after I got home, my workplace had a great huge fruit basket delivered! My appetite was pretty low, but fresh fruit was one of the few things that appealed to me. I got the delivery guy to set the (heavy!) basket down next to my computer so that I could nosh easily. Having the fruit close to hand ensured frequent snacking, which was just what my body wanted and needed at that point. :-)

So I would suggest that your mother wait with the get-well gift until you get home - and then bring fruit. Or - another idea - you'll need to be getting lots of fluids, so something that might encourage you to do that. Fancy fruit juices? A deluxe selection of herbal teas?

Re: Post op gift ideas

Thanks so much for your ideas. I could really go a nice fruit basket right now actually to calm these nerves!

I told mum that just having her there will be the best gift. Afterall she's coming to live with us for 2 weeks afterwards to care for miss 4, miss 2 & mr 18 months! That's a pretty massive gift in itself!

Thanks so much x

Re: Post op gift ideas

Some nice pajamas or a gown! Or a new book, if you like to read.

Re: Post op gift ideas

So happy your mom is coming!

You've already gotten great ideas!

Just mentioning what might be nice to have on hand -whether you buy them or get as gifts:
A soft robe
Rubber soled slippers
Magazines, books, movies
Comfy granny panties or boy shorts
Soft yoga pants
Small individually wrapped snacks and assorted drinks
A grabber(to reach things if alone)
Cute comfy long tee shirts/nighties to relax in
Cute basket for next to your bed with chap stick, throat lozenges, face moisturizer, hand cream, - anything else you like!
An iPad nearby
A small adjustable table good for snacks and reading
Lots of comfy soft pillows and a long body pillow

Hugs and have a safe surgery and good recovery

Re: Post op gift ideas

A smallish (500ml) sports bottle to drink water from--if I'd not had that at hospital, I wouldn't have drunk any water at all, since drinking from a cup meant sitting and I couldn't manage that! It meant that first dreadful bowel movement happened earlier, which made me more comfortable. I'm still using the bottle 10 days later! I also second the fruit idea--things like grapes and seedless satsumas that you can pick on easily. Good luck and so happy your mom will be there to help!
