Upcoming hysterectomy 3/28: Post-op expectations

I aam having a LAVH on March 28. I have had a couples wine road trip planned for awhile for April 9th (12 days post-op), I will be on a bus for most of the time with stops inbetween. DH will be with me the entire time. Should I cancel? Not sure how I will be feeling and I know not everyone is the same, just wanting some insight.
thank you.

Re: Post-op expectations

At 12 days post op I wouldn't have wanted to ride in a car more than 2-3 hours, much less a bus. I had perineal sutures from the vaginal removal of my uterus and it was difficult to sit up for extended periods of time (3-4 hrs) and then I'd have to lay down awhile. I'm sure some women will say it's doable, but I would have contingency plans in place before trying. Is it possible that you could take your own car in case you needed to stop more frequently? What will the activity be like once you get there? Personally I'd postpone it, especially if you could get a refund. If not you'd need to be flexible.

Re: Post-op expectations

I agree with Mollybear, that 12 days after surgery there is no way I would have been able to endure a bus tour. Sitting after surgery may prove to be difficult and uncomfortable. Bumps in the road could be quite painful, even with a pillow in your lap. You still might need to take pain killers and feel very fatigued. I was still in bed rest at 12 days marching around in my pjs and even that was exhausting.

While it is true we all heal differently, it is impossible to know how you will feel so soon after surgery. Perhaps you could discuss with your doctor the feasibility of such a jaunt. While no one has a crystal ball, your doctor should be able to give you realistic guidelines for recovery.

What should I expect for Recovery Time?

Hugs and best of luck on your upcoming surgery.

Re: Post-op expectations

For comparison, I had a very easy recovery, took only Aleve for pain. I attended a family wedding at 2 weeks, which was a 30 min car ride. I didn't feel up to attending the reception. I didn't have setbacks, but wasn't up to lengthy socializing. Also, for a wine tour, check in advance as to whether any potential pain medication, including OTC, are OK with alcohol. I would not have enjoyed the outing you describe, but that's not to say it's impossible.
