Upcoming hysterectomy 4/4: Traveling & moving

Hi....we put our house on market b4 I found out I NEED a hysterectomy for enlarged uterus & lrg. Fibroids that are putting a lot of pressure on my lrg intestine/rectum causing severe stomach & bowel issues.( scheduled for April 4...omg in 5 days). Anyways we just excepted a offer & are looking at a June 30 closing. But still have to find somewhere to live. So somewhere around 6 wks post op we will need to travel ( plane or car) from MA to NC to look for a house. Then pack up & move after closing. Just hubby, dog & I, all kids grown & moved. We are getting all non essentials packed & now b4 surgery. And when hubby home w/me he can do the rest. Dr knows of our situation. Says this all may be possible if no complications & I REST & follow all his instruction. Any words of wisdom or thoughts from anyone of "my sisters " who have perhaps had to deal w/a similar situation. I'm getting nervous! Seems like to much on my plate right now.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/4: Traveling & moving

You definitely do have a lot on your plate but if you doctor feels confident that you can get it all done, then trust his advice. However I think it is critical that you follow all instructions, including no lifting over 10 lbs. until he clears you for normal activity (usually around week 6) and rest rest rest. I also suggest getting some help in place, folks who can help you pack or lift boxes to take some pressure off of you during your recovery.
Good luck! We're here to support you through this journey!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/4: Traveling & moving

Hi and welcome!

Yikes....

Sarrie22 is right - you definitely have a lot on your plate. Her suggestion to rally others to help is excellent. And as she mentioned, you will really need to be careful not to lift heavy things. Rest will be essential as the fatigue can really be a factor - especially when you are a bit stressed.

I know from personal experience moving cross country many times that professional packers can be expensive, but than they are responsible for the contents arriving safely. You might consider college students but definitely anything very valuable should probably be handled by the movers. It's a great idea that you have started focusing on the non-essentials. There are many charitable organizations that will pick up useful items that you don't want to move.

You may want to contact a realtor in NC well in advance so that you view properties online and cut down on the actual wear and tear of house-hunting.
Here is an article with some general guidelines: Traveling After Surgery

This will take some planning but is doable.

Hugs and best of luck on your surgery and post move journeys-we are here to support you.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/4: Traveling & moving

Thanks Sarrie22 & Marciamae....I plan to take rest, rest & rest ! Have many friends that r planning to help us. I'm actually in contact w/a few realtors in NC. We plan to rent 1st. Then look for a good area to purchase what could be our last hous ...since we r in our early 50's. My husband is 20 yrs retired Navy & plans on retiring from his civilian job by 60. But I may have to go back to work FT. W/all bowel problems caused prob by my uterus & fibroids I've only been able to work PT. But we r hoping this surgery will allow me to start this new chapter of our lives healthier & happier : ) I'll keep posting . Thanks again : )
