Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Age at Surgery 78
Location: LA, CA

Today I am seven (7) years post TLH. All is well so far.

After 25 yrs of HRT [I didn't know any better, I guess] I started "spotting" Xmas 08 and "ran" to my gynecologist in January 09. He immediately scheduled a DNC and the result came in as endometrial carcinoma, grade 1, stage 1. As he did not perform these kind of surgeries he offered to assist one of the "carcinoma experienced surgeons".

Now the search was on to thoroughly research this area, the type of surgery, and experts in the field. I ultimately chose the chief surgeon of a well-known hospital and opted for laparoscopic surgery. By the time I went under the knife 3-31-09, the post op lab result showed it had progressed and was grade 1, stage 2. All went well and I recovered quickly.

A word of caution: Naturally in any surgery one has to sign myriad consents BUT be careful how it is worded. In my case it did not specifically specify "laparoscopic" only, so I had the surgeon add that provision and initial it.

On the day of surgery and while being wheeled into the OR, the male nurse said "now it may become necessary to do "abdominal". I told him "no", my "contract" specifies laparoscopic only.

And so it was done. BUT at a follow-up visit the surgeon mentioned that because of my "size" [104 lbs] it was a little difficult and "I almost would have gone in abdominally". He knew, of course, what that would have produced. He said he "washed me out thoroughly" and had sampled about half a dozen or so lymph node. All were negative. Thus no chemo or radiation.

I went home the next day. Naturally I worried about recurrence, but about three years later I was old "you are cured". I have had no issues since.

My health has been good. I do miss the lack of hormones sexually. But then, age has its own issues.

The hysterectomy was a MUST for me and once the carcinoma diagnosis is made, there is NO time to loose.

If faced with a carcinoma diagnosis, there is no time waste!!! It must be done.
Good luck to all who are subject to this surgery
