Eleven Days Post-Op and Doing Wonderfully Well!!!

I just wanted to post an update on the pre-op board to let the Ladies in Waiting know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel you are going through.

My surgery was 11 days ago on May 23. I had to wait almost two full months for my surgery after it was scheduled due to committments at work. (I teach at our local community college and couldn't get out giving the final exam at the end of April.)

Like most of you LsIW, I was a nervous wreck. I had never had so much as a broken bone, let alone major surgery. I have always been extremely healthy until I started having excessive bleeding in January due to the fibroid twins (which were the size of oranges in a uterus the size of a cantelope. A regular fruitbowl!) The bleeding caused anemia and extreme fatigue. I was so tired all of the time that I could barely move. I also had to get up to use the bathroom four or five times a night because of the pressure of my uterus on my bladder.

After my surgery was scheduled, I just quietly and completely freaked out. I couldn't think, I couldn't concentrate, I obsessed about the surgery to the point of alienating half my friends, most of my family, and almost everyone at work. No matter where I was, I just wanted to be on the Hystersisters website. I felt that this was the only place where I could get answers and support from ladies who knew exactly how I felt and what I was going through.

My surgery date finally arrived, and I did just fine. The pain meds did cause some nausea, but I overcame it and survived. (Click on the www button at the bottom of my post to read about my trip to the castle.)

I came home after three nights in the hospital. I wasn't confined to bed. I wasn't in a lot of pain. I wasn't helpless. These were all things I was afraid of before surgery. But those fears were unfounded.

In the past eleven days, I have followed my princess training to the letter. I drink plenty of fluids, I rest in my recliner (thank God for laptop computers and recliners!) and I take short walks. I lost 15 pounds after surgery, and hope to lose even more. I went to the hospital on my period, and left Aunt Flo on the operating table. I have had NO bleeding at all. And I no longer have to get up to go to the bathroom at night.

Today, I was able to go out for my second trip out in the real world. I went to lunch with my Mom and I went grocery shopping afterward, riding in one of those motorized carts. And I laughed all the way down the feminine products aisle. Twice!

I now feel better at this point than I did in the months leading up to my surgery. I feel healthier, alive. Granted, I still tire easily, I still need naps, I still can't do everything I did before, and I do still need pain meds sometimes. But it's getting easier and easier. The light at the end of the tunnel is almost here, I can feel the warmth on my face.

Ladies, hang in there. Yes, I know you are scared. That is normal. I know you are uncertain about if you are making the right decision. Only you can know that for sure. And granted, we all heal differently so my experience may not be yours. But you will make it through. And you will be fine.

s to each of you. You are in my prayers.

Lisa

Lisa,

Thank you for your post. I am going in tomorrow (wed) and really REALLY needed to hear what you had to say!!!
I am so obsessed with this surgery - I am so obsessed with the fact that I am losing my uterus. I DO KNOW this is the best thing for me and I will be relieved in the end. I am just sooo panicy and SCARED - really really really SCARED!!!
