What worked for me...

I'm three weeks post-up (LAVH) and doing very well. No pain meds since Day 2, now walking three miles a day, minimal bleeding. I got myself as fit as I possibly could before the surgery, getting into the gym four times a week and concentrating on cardio fitness (static bike, cross-trainer, uphill treadmill.). I did plenty of abdominal work as well. In the recovery room, my nurse told me she could tell I was fit and healthy. I had almost no pain apart from the residual gas!

I also revved up my diet; lots of green veg, pulses, avocado, green smoothies. I gave up alcohol for a couple of weeks beforehand. And I took (and am still taking) supplements - Q10, Bromelene (enzyme from pineapple, helps internal bruising), Vit C, Vit B complex, Acidophilus (lay off the fish oils for ten days prior to surgery, though - they can make your blood clot too much.).

I could manage stairs no problem the day after surgery, and get my own socks on (a plus.).

I'd really recommend taking whatever time and care you can to get your body into the best state possible before anything like this. Lifestyles and availability of time vary, of course, and we all have lots of commitments which can mean we put ourselves at the bottom of the list - but with this surgery, it will pay you dividends if you invest a little more in yourself for those weeks leading up to your op.

All the best - it's good on the other side.
