putting the hysterical in hysterectomy

Hello. I've only posted once before so bear with me. I'm scheduled for my surgery next wednesday the 19th. I've always be a kind of "nevous nellie" type of gal, but this is ridiculous. I can't sleep, can't eat, nauseous, have the trots and on the verge of tears constantly. Is this normal?? My husband says to just "relax"--yeah right. I can't seem to calm down. My pre-op appointments are tomorrow afternoon, so I am hoping that will help ease my fears. I know I need this surgery--I have endo, boggy uterous, constant bleeding and pain. But my anxieties just have taken over. Hubby says that must be where the hyster in
hysterectomy comes from, cuz I'm hysterical.

Thanks for letting me vent.

You are experiencing some real feelings that are very normal the last week before surgery. I knew I needed and wanted this surgery but still I was "on the edge" the whole last week. Mind you my surgery was June 4th and I had been bleeding since April 20 and still was edgy about having my hysterectomy. Go to the pull down menus there are some great questions to ask at your pre-op appointments. I printed two lists so my doc and I could go over the questions together and I wrote down the answers. I always feel better when I have more information. Some of the previous posts have suggested getting medicine when you see your doctor to help you relax. I will be praying for you and waiting to see your post after you come home. Think of you and your doctor as partners in this situation and ask lots of questions.

Prayers and s to you.

I was in your shoes about two weeks ago. I've always been the nervous nellie kind too. My mom even used to call me that. My surgery was scheduled for May 31 in March and about a week before I took a long walk with my dog and had a nice long talk with myself. I finally decided that this surgery was the best thing to get that growing fibroid out plus no more periods - After having them for 28 years that didn't sound like such a bad deal after all. I thought of it this way - if it takes care of the problem why not? Then I kept repeating that old song in my head "I am strong" "I am invincible" "I am woman" And together we can take on anything. You will do great and after you will wonder what all the fuss was about. I know I did. I feel great and will go back to work next Monday. (Although I'm glad I only work part-time).

Just do what you need to do to get you through. The waiting is the worst. You will be amazed at how well you handle it.

Lots of s

Hi Mary,

Welcome to Hystersisters!! I'm glad that you decided to post so that we could reassure you that it's perfectly normal to be nervous about any surgery, and a hysterectomy is major surgery.

Here are the links to the drop-down menus that redsonya mentioned in her post:

Hi Mary,

Welcome to the 6/19 club! I had my preop appt. last Friday, and feel much better now! Be sure to call the hospital though --- I called on Monday to see if I needed an appointment for a preadmit and was told I wasn't on the schedule! The preadmit nurse (?) called the doctor's office and everything is fine now, but be forewarned!

Take a deep breath and prioritize -- what needs to get done will, and what doesn't wasn't that important anyway!
