Hormones and Breast Cancer

I know this is probably just an over reaction on my part but I need some input if possible.

About one week ago I started having mild pains in my left breast.
The pain got worse and over the weekend I found a very small lump.

I went to the doctor yesterday and he gave me antibiotics for ten days. Told me to come back in two weeks and we would decide whether or not to go for other tests. I had a mammogram two years ago it was fine.

In the mean time this lump is kinda of scary. Am I worrying for nothing? I have read hormones cause breast cancer. I have been on them now for about 9 months. Is that enough time to cause cancer. My Doctor swithced them to .5 of estrace pill yesterday.

Thnak for any help.

Hormones and Breast Cancer

Most (but not all) breast cancers are not painful. In most cases, lumps that are painful are not cancer but rather an infection or irritation. I am glad that your Dr is doing a round of antibiotics, but I would request a repeat mammogram after the antibiotics are gone even if the lump is gone. I don't know your age, but don't you get them yearly? I would think that especially being on hrt, even though the additional risk is small for the first several years (from what I read and what my Dr relied to me), that they would recommend yearly mammograms. My mother had breast cancer 20 yrs ago and I have had yearly mammograms since I was 25.

Hope you are feeling much better soon.

Breast Cancer

Do you have a family history of Female Cancers that are giving you cause for worry?
I don't take ERT due to my family history and my own symptoms.
There are a lot of factors that cause Breast Pain.
Too much caffiine is one of them.
However, Breast Cancer is some serious business and I don't think anyone with "concern" should be lax about getting things
checked out.
Have an exam and you will feel much much better when you
have been given the clear because your x-ray films look good.

It does sound more like an infection, due to the pain. My favorite book on breast cancer is "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer" by J. Lee and D. Zava. Estrogen can cause breast cancer but usually if it's not used with progesterone. Progesterone, according to their studies and research, can prevent breast cancer. Excellent book.

I can relate to how scared you are. I too, have been dealing with this for a few months, now. I felt pain in my left breast and felt a lump! I was scared to death, as my grandmother died from breast cancer. I went to my doctor, she ordered a mammogram & ultrasound. They found just a cyst, but she wanted me to follow up with a general surgeon. He felt something next to the cyst and had me come back one month later. It's still there. He did a biopsy and I should hear back the results by Friday. It's pretty scary! Just follow up until you get solid answers!!! It's the only body we have!!! Take care...

Mardi,

How scarey! I have had one scare myself several years ago. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and two Aunts weren't so lucky, so when they called me back for more films on my mammogram, I was terrified. My follow up with the surgeon gave me some relief and all has been fine since.

Sending healthy thoughts your way for your results on Fri. Please let us all know how you are doing!
