mom in hospital
Hey all I havent posted in awhile cause mom was doing very well. Well she got some kind of infection this last weekend. Still don't know what kind. She was admitted in the hospital last night. She had a 104 temp that finally broke today. They took some urine and it was ok no findings. They took some blood and we are waiting for that to come back.
My mom had a rad hysterectomy (cervical cancer found in 2 lymph nodes) in April and started radiation 4 weeks ago she has had one round of chemo so that makes her more suseptible to infections right? She has another next week that is if her cell count is up.
I am so scared when i saw her this morning she was saying bad bad things - she is usually very strong - is it cause everything hit her and she is having a bad day? She is get thru this i have to believe it.
Thank you.

Sorry to Hear About Your Mom
Yes, you are more susceptible to infections while on chemo. It knocks the blood counts way down, including the white cells which fight infection. This is one thing they really warn you about and want you to report any fever, etc. at once. Best place for your mom was in the hospital to get it under control. She likely was having a bad day. Figure it's less than three months and she's had the surgery, the diagnosis, radiation, chemo, now the infection--that's an awful lot to handle! There are bad days and good ones and a lot of in between ones. A big "hug: and a er for both of you.

Thank you
You're right. I keep thinking my mom is this superwoman (which she is ) she is allowed to have bad days like the rest of us. It is just very scarey to see. I guess the doc seems to think the porto-cath is the culprit for the infection! Not positive yet still have to wait for blood work to get back.
Keep praying and thank you again. I will keep you posted.

I've been there!
Hello!
I just finished taking my Dad through chemo, and the worst part for me was seeing him not be his regular little bucky beaver! His white count went really low a couple times, but there was a shot they could give him to bring it back up. We kept the kids out of his face and never visited when they had a cold. He was good about washing his hands alot and Mom changes the hand towels frequently.
AND, he is in tip top form now, one year later. He had a port a cath too, but it never worked. Kept getting clogged.
Just hang in there and you will soon have your regular Mom back!

You are just the sweetest daughter!!!! What your mom is going through now, sometimes happens during chemotherapy and radiation. It's kinda like the immune system shuts down. Hopefully this is just a little bump in the road to a full recovery for your mom!

I'm so sorry your mom is going through this scare. It is so hard to see someone you love going through such a rough time.
I know its hard when someone normally "upbeat" has some down times, but that goes with the territory when going through this. Its so normal to go through a whole host of emotions when getting thrown so many curves. You can go up and down alot, so just know she'll need more 's during these "down" times.
I'll be keeping you and your mom in my prayers, I hope that wherever the infection is, it will be found easily and taken care of.
{{hugs}} to you!
Vicki
