How to locate an excellent cancer center?

Hi, I need advice on how to locate an excellent cancer center. I am 47. After reading the stories here I can see there are so many uncertainties. One doctor tells me even though I have early endometrial cancer I have time because it is slow growing. He says I can wait until Christmas.

But the stories here show me that often the diagnosis is worse once the doctor does more testing. I asked if an MRI or CT scan would help and the doctor said they are too expensive. I have excellent insurance and want to check myself into a large cancer center. Any ideas?

Thank you!

Hi, I hope you will forget this Doctor! What ridiculous thing to say- "it is too expensive" Is he your regular gynecologist? Where do you live? Do you need a referal from a primary care provider to go to a specialist? If you do, get the ball rolling. I had to demand it from my doctor. I went to my gyn-onc after a very bad pap. I insisted. This is your body. I hope you have been holding up well, it is hard to be told you have cancer, but to not know the specifics would be hard on anyone!

You might want to call your insurance, and see who is in your area and on your plan. Otherwise, there is a site on the internet to search for gyn-oncologists. I do not know the link, but will write you back when I get it.

Please send a big mouthful your doctors way. Tell him what you want. Demand it. We know are bodies. I was so fortunate I followed my instincts. It may have saved my life. sss to you. Thanks for poting on cancer concerns! Please let us know when your CT Scan is scheduled for. I'll be for you. Oh- let me know the area that you live, if you want to e-mail me, send me a private message!!!

National Institutes of Health. I couldn't find the centers on their list this a.m. but I admit I'm in a big rush to get to volunteer job. There's a "call us" on there--they can direct you to a Clinical Cancer Center near you. Also has a listing of gyn/oncs by state--on the left, after you scroll down past what's on the site. Maybe I can help more later. Agree with beachgirl--time for a new doctor--one who cares about YOU and wants to TREAT you.

I am not computer literate so it just dawned on me I can reply on this message board instead of emailing. Duhhh. I already sent emails. Thank you so much for your encouragement!
