Home after surgery - things that helped

Hi all,

Had my robotic hysterectomy on 1/4. Very large nasty looking fibroid, uterus and tubes all out. Took a while to wake up. Lots of soreness but felt ok up until midnight. That's when the vomiting started and didn't end until 6am.
Nurses were great to help with that. I was able to eat a clear food tray around 10am. Disharged around noon and resting at home.

Things that helped before surgery:

Make sure you are very clear to the anesthesiologist if you get sick from general anesthesia. Make sure these doctors are LISTENING to you and WRITING things down so that there aren't any surprises when you come out of the OR. Nobody wants to have a 6 hour vomit marathon. Beware of dilaudid as a pain med. That made me violently ill.

Once in your room ask for ice chips when you tolerate those ask for ginger ale or water. You don't want to be dehydrated because that also makes you nauseous.

Things I brought to the hospital:
Pony tail holder, sleep eye mask scented with lavender, chapstick, Lifesaver peppermints, ear plugs and nice smelling facial wipes. It felt so good to use the wipes to freshen up and get the funk off your face.

Bring cookies, candy and other sweet treats and give to the nurses when you get into your room. They love that stuff and deserve treats since they work so hard. Always say please and thank you.

Things to have ready once you get home:
A tray table for bed, water, ginger ale and saltines next your bed. A mist diffuser to blow a nicely scented mist next to your bed. Also, a step stool is great for getting into bed.

Hope these suggestions are of some help to you. I wish you all good luck and a healthy recovery. Xoxo
