Had partial hysterectomy over a year ago still have periods (orig 01/11/2017) UPDATE (08/01/2018)

So I'm still getting periods, not heavy at all. Been dealing with it pretty well, however lately I stay on longer than a week. I can deal with the period but the consistent spotting after the period is driving me crazy.

Re: Had partial hysterectomy over a year ago still have periods

You're likely already aware that women who retain their cervix may have Mini-Periods, usually not long, usually very light, and for a number of women they'll taper to nothing. Surgeons treat the cervix with silver nitrate during our surgeries to cauterize the remaining uterine lining, but sometimes don't get it all. Silver nitrate is an option for continuing mini-periods, too. I think the lengthening of your periods and the continuous spotting would be the reasons I'd go back to the gyn and try to find the answer.

Did your post-op pathology report indicate anything that may now be affecting the cervix? I've not had mini-periods, but I'm aware that my pathology findings (fibroids, adenomyosis) could resurface in my cervix at a later date.

Congratulations! I don't know how old you are? But I remember how happy I was when my periods started to become more irregular in my late 40s. I knew the end was in sight and I could hardly wait! :-)

I'm 48. Had my uterus out in 2015, kept cervix. Still had periods all this time. Finally missed one!! Yes I'm excited.

Re: Had partial hysterectomy over a year ago still have periods

I had three years of increasingly irregular periods before they finally stopped altogether when I was 51. I actually did up a chart on Excel to keep track of them. I could see on the chart that they were becoming increasingly irregular, and this cheered me up. :-)

Thanks for coming back and sharing after all this time! You never know when your update will help another Sister later.

I kept my cervix and ovaries, but managed to steer clear of the mini-periods. Prior to surgery, my "periods" never let up, but were irregular and unpredictable. For all I know, I could've been late to the Menopause Party like my mom was. I guess we're all getting there eventually!
