Silly question

When you have your surgery, do they put your legs in stirrups and if so, why? I've had a pain in my left groin ever since my surgery and the Doc said it was probably stretched ligaments.Since I have an abdominal incision, I fail to see the need for stirrups!(IMHO)

GREAT Question!

I had a TAH/BSO so maybe mine wasn't the same. I got out my operative report to check to see how I was put and it states, "with the patient in the supine position" so I at least didn't get in stirrups that I can read. However, I have yet to determine how the second surgeon performed a sigmoidoscopy on me and I don't think I want to know and I think that's why I was so miserable afterwards.

Silly question

s Carol

Stirrups would not be used for an abdominal hysterectomy. Perhaps someone was leaning on your groin during the surgery, or your leg got twisted a bit when they moved you from the OR table to the stretcher.
Hope it's better soon.

Silly question

Actually, they sometimes do use stirrups for a TAH. Mine was a radical TAH, and I don't know if that makes a difference, but they told me up front that I would be positioned in stirrups with one doc stationed "down there" (I"m not sure how many surgeons were involved, but the main surgeon basically indicated that the person in that area would need to be there to assist). I also think I remember them mentioning that IF there was a need to do anything vaginally, I would already be in position for that.

I have arthritis and my knees get stiff, so I made sure to tell them when they positioned the stirrups to not scruntch my knees up too much so I wouldn't have knee pain on top of everything else!

Like many things (as I have learned from this wonderful site), it seems to vary from doctor to doctor! Anyway, I hope your pain clears up soon!
