Upcoming hysterectomy: How do I explain my feelings and emotions to family and friends?

Hi! =] my surgery is scheduled for April 4th. I have endometriosis and Pelvic Congestion Syndrome and I am 29. When I found out I had to get the surgery I was an emotional wreck for about 3 weeks. I was angry, sad and scared. We are done having kids, not by choice, and have been blessed with one amazing little boy but this surgery has made that even more real. I keep getting told we'll it could be worse or at leas you aren't dying. How do I explain to them how I am feeling and all the crazy emotions that have come along with it?

UGH I hate that line! My family has said it to me lots too regarding my hysterectomy (which is next Friday) and when my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. And it seems like no matter how much you try to tell them you get the same line. You need to surround yourself with positive and helpful comments/people. I have found a lot of that on this site. Scroll through the story part of the site, some of them are quite uplifting .

I know how difficult that can be. Your anxiety level before surgery is very high and after surgery, you will go through a lot of hormonal changes - whether you keep your ovaries or not. It is important to tell folks who ask that while you are hopeful this surgery will improve your overall health and well-being, you are also anxious and can use support. If your husband isn't sure how to assist you, have him check out Mr. HysterSisters – A Hysterectomy Support Site for Men . It may answer any questions he has and help him understand what you are going through and how best to help you navigate the coming weeks. Folks think that because hysterectomy is a common surgery, it is just "routine". But I can tell you that there is nothing routine about it. It is a big adjustment, a few weeks/months of recovery and a new chapter in your life. Surround yourself with people who understand that, or who want to help.
