The Cuff??

What is this about a vaginal cuff? I never heard of it before, did I have it before the hyst.? Or only after? Where is it, what does it do, and how do I know if it's doing it????

The Cuff??

Hi Groovyrena!

The way my surgeon explained it to me was that when he stitched my vagina closed at the top, he fashioned a vaginal cuff. It takes the form of what my cervix was like (I wish I could draw it for you). Someone else described it here as being sort of like the tied end of a balloon.

I didn't have it before, because my cervix at the opening to my uterus was at the top of my vagina (actually in my case, it was more like in the middle of my vagina, but that's another story!). I didn't think to ask what, if anything, it does because I assumed it was cosmetic. Maybe another sister will know if it has a function.

But ask your doctor to explain what s/he did during your surgery and ask to see a diagram.

The Cuff??

The way I understand it as it was explained on a medical website is the vaginal cuff is created once the cervix is removed that is stiched shut, where the cervix of course was not because it opened into the uterus which is now gone. The cervix is in the center of the pelvic floor muscle that sort of holds evrything in place- urethra, rectum, vagina. It goes all the way across much like your diaphram does. The cuff fills the same space and is part of what both holds the vagina in place and maintains the integrity/strength of the pelvic floor muscle overall.

More on the cuff........

Thanks you, Sisters, for the explanation, my DR. did NOT mention this, and I will ask about it on Mon. when I see her. This is a very interesting development, I wonder how sex will be, I hope to find out sooner than later!!!!!

Vaginal Cuff

I have a vaginal cuff and I don't feel any different during sex. My husband says I feel tighter but other than that doesn't notice any difference. I was tentative the first time, imagined ripping it open, but had no problems. My DR did say for me to be on top so I could control the movement. Hope that helps answer your question.

The Cuff??

The first time we tried, I was on top per my DR's Advice. We waited 7 weeks, again per my Dr's Advice. We were both a little nervous so took it nice and slow. Wasn't that bad, although the next day I was pretty sore and tender. So we decided to wait a bit. (My husband travels a lot so it wasn't so bad between the waits). The second time again I was on top and didn't experience any pain or tenderness. Since then we've done it the regular missionary position, and side position. I'm at 12 weeks and haven't experienced any other problems.

Oh, and my husband said to add that he enjoys every minute of the new and improved "playground."

All done!

My Dr mentioned it after surgery and I didnt think to ask what the cuff was...that shows how attentive you are that day. I had a TVH Monday and feel pretty good now. Taking it easy and hoping to get more energy as the weeks progress. She did it with an epidural and general, and told her that afterwards it felt like a non event, until the epidural wore off. AHA! If they do a epidural ask for Benedryl for the itching after it wears off. I was itching like crazy and didnt know why, until the 3rd shift nurse asked me if I was scratching and I thought I was allergic to the sheets. DUH But I am glad to be done and on the mend and I will ask more about the cuff when I see the Dr. Thanks for the support! Heidi
