Hello All,

I wasn't sure whether to post this on the alternatives to hysterectomy board or here, but decided that this would be the best place b/c I believe that this new option is relevant mostly to early-stage cervical cancer patients. I apologize if this has already been discussed on this board; I'm new to it and haven't read all of the posts.

I am 31 years old and was diagnosed with micro-invasive cervical adenocarcinoma in June 2002. My gynecologist told me I needed a hysterectomy and referred me to an oncologist. To my surprise, the oncologist told me of a new procedure called a trachelectomy in which ONLY the cervix is removed. I had the procedure on July 2, 2002, along with removal of the lymph nodes. Fortunately, all of the cancer was removed and the lymph nodes were clear. He also biopsied my uterus and found no cancer.

I wanted to let you know about this procedure because, in theory, it allows a woman to maintain fertility while removing the cancer. Approximately 400 women in the world have had this procedure to date (I was my doc's 10th). Therefore, it may still be considered somewhat experimental at this date.

I work in the field of cancer research (ironically, on prostate cancer!) and have read virtually all of the published scientific material on trachelectomies (there's not that much yet), although in no way could I be considered an expert on this subject.

That said, I wanted to let you all know of this new procedure since loss of fertility is such a devastating blow to some of us, and to make myself available for any questions that I may be able to help with.

Good luck everyone, it's a hard road we all have but this is a beautiful site and I'm grateful that I found it.
