Cyndy, Could Use Hexalen Help

There is a woman on another board who may be taking Hexalen after several other chemos failed her. She is wondering about how it's taken, side effects, anti-nausea and other meds at the same time, etc. If you could post, I'll go over there and update her. It'll be interesting for me too--I think the doctor is now open to trying Hexalen for me if carbo fails. Thanks!

Don't you agree--we need a fighting Badger sign on here?

Cyndy, Could Use Hexalen Help

Hi Margaret--

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you -- here is my information on Hexalen -- it is a capsule that is taken four times a day). The main side effect I had with it (and the reason I quit taking it) was nausea -- to be honest, it was pretty bad, but the MDs told me that roughly half the women who take it can tolerate Hexalen without any problems and the other half have pretty bad nausea. I had nausea even with antinausea meds such as Zofran. I took all of my other meds at the same time and there was no interaction. I know that it can be a very effective chemo drug (actually, my own doctor at the UW helped develop it). I wasn't on it very long (less than a week) because my nausea was so bad. The MD then put me on etoposide (VP-16) which I tolerated much better. Don't let my story of nausea discourage you, however; each person tolerates meds differently and what may not work for one person may work for another person. I hope this is the info that you need -- if you have any other questions, just let me know.

Love,

Cyndy
