hi desert sisters...i'm a lady in waiting with a bit o' :confusion:.
i do not want to take hormones . how will i discern what is normal post-op discomfort from menopausal symptoms.?i am 47 and have never had :hot flashes: etc. i love and trust my gyn and i know that he regularly prescribes HRT for his pts. do i just say"no thanks dr. b" so that my castle stay begins hormone free?and, as long as i know any symptoms will pass with time, i can tough it out. i mean, lots of women survived and thrived menopause before HRT right?

Hi lisa and welcome s

Well this is a dicision you have to make I feel it's always good to work with your DR... But the choice is yours... My Dr is really opened about natural as well as HRT....... So He really did respect my dicision......

Lisa you may feel nothing and be one of the lucky sisters......I felt the flashes right after surgery... But I have spoken to lots of gals that felt a bit warm... Or nothing.......

Once I started my supplements I felt better.... Soy... cohosh.... flaxseed oil w/omaga3...ETC... So talk to your DR about your options... But remember if you don;t get bothered by anything then all you really need is GOOD vit/min supplements amd calicum....

Remember we are here for you anytime... God bless

hormones and endo

I see that you had endo. It may be a wise decision to avoid HRT since you had endo. I think you can just tell your doctor what choice you have made and why.

I had to quit taking estrogen after an endo return. I have been feeling fine. I do use Vagifem so technically I am not "hormone free" anymore. I have been fine without the hormones. No hot flashes. I just get a little warm. I also avoid all of the supplements that have an estrogenic effect. I take a multi, extra vitamin B, C and lots of calcium.

lisa t, I see you are scheduled 9-11-02. That will be my 1 year anniversary. (hysterversary, I should say)
I never took any hormones. I didn't get my first flash until about 4 weeks after surgery and my hot flashes have never been too bad. They came often, after that first one, though, and my doctor put me on Efexor. (a mild anti-depressant that lessens hot flashes) I have heard of women getting them in the recovery room so there is no way to say how you'll be. Everybody is different and there is no one "normal."

Best of luck to you in September!

Love,
Maggie

I had a TAH/BSO in May. I am 44. I did the Climara patch for 5 weeks, then switched to Estratest HS. After a month, I just quit. (It has been 4 weeks now.) I am allergic to soy, and am doing no natural supplements.

I get irratible at times, but have had no hot flashes or other bad symptoms. I am just hoping I am one of the lucky ones who will sail through menopause! Of course, I am on Prozac and Xanax...maybe that helps!
