Surgery Postponed- by me

I had my pre-op on Friday for the TAH BSO. Things were going so so until I read the section on blood transfusions. I want to donate my own blood in case I need a transfusion! I just had not thought about this issue - and I did not know that I needed a Chest XRAY, EKG and more LAB work! I need to call my insurance and make sure they cover all this plus I thought it was poor communication on my doctors part to let me know all this at such a late date. My surgery was scheduled for Tuesday - August 13th and Monday would have been the only day to get all the tests done! So I was disappointed at first but I just could not go along with the possible blood transfusion without using my own blood. I have had hip and sinus surgeries in the past and there was a re-circulation blood machine. after this period I'll call the Red Cross and donate my blood so probably mid Sept will have the surgery- with all the bowel prep that is necessary I don't want to be on my period at the same time! Has anyone gotten the new Hyster Sister spiral journal - does it have a pre-printed checklist for pre-op & post op? Sorry this is long!

surgery postponed

Do you have children who could donate blood to you? This could be an option. I think that's what I'm going to do. My dr said usually unnecessary to give blood. I shouldn't worry. I just want to get this over with. I hate all of it

I'm scheduled for 9/9/02

Good for you, 2Christie!

I think that it's so important to trust your instincts. Major surgery is a big enough deal that you don't need to be worrying about possible complications that you feel strongly about and can have some control over. If it's not an emergency, you have the option of taking the time to get all your ducks in a row.

Here' a link to the page that tells all about the Hyster Sisters Journal, and yes, it has a checklist! I wish I had one before my surgery.

You better check

Some insurance will not pay for the blood trasnsfusions if it is your own blood, Don't ask me why but I think it may be due to the fact that the blood bank charges more in these cases. So in the event you are transfused with your own blood you will be paying for the blood and the transfusion. I know how you feel I too wanted to donate my own blood, but due to being anemic I am unable to do so. My surgery is 8/13 and I am getting nervous.
As far as the EKG and the chest Xray mine will be done the morning of the surgery, these test do not take that long and are a
standard part of most operation. I have had them done with every surgery I have had. Good luck to you .

Christie,
I have a hystersisters journal and yes it has a checklist. I have found it useful even post op. Of course I all things HysterSisters.

As for the blood, my doctor required me to donate blood pre-op. He told me that it was standard procedure. I was shocked as I had surgeries before and it was never a requirement, but thinking about it, it is a good idea.

Best wishes on your upcoming surgery. Do let us know how you're doing when you're up to it.

One other thing...

Not only will you be paying for the blood and transfusion of your own blood, if you DON'T need the transfusion or blood, you will pay for it anyway. If they draw and store your blood for you, and you don't use it, you still pay. You may want to check that out too.

I asked about doing this too - dr. says it is very rarely needed (a transfusion). But if it makes you feel better, just check out all the details first.

My sister had a TVH 2 wks before I did. She donated her own blood and had to pay for it. I decided not to because of time constraints mostly. I needed to do the surgery before August or I would have to wait until October.

Hope this info helps - my thoughts are with you.

I've gotta hand it to you, that's a pretty brave move. Cancelling until everything is the way you want it? Amazing! The medical establishment rarely sees such a thing, I'm sure.

You're right, very poor communication on the part of your dr's staff. I knew a month ahead about the x-rays and EKGs and x-ray and took care of those things according to my time schedule. I didn't worry about blood transfusion though, and would be too anemic anyway.

Still, I'm amazed how you could do it, with the sheer logistical complications of planning for work vacations, child care, etc. And the waiting being the worst part, how did you do it?

But congratulations to you on sticking to what you feel is best for you. I am amazed AND impressed.

Good luck to you--
