Things people say....

Yesterday I was talking to a father of one of my students. Somehow we started talking about babies. He asked if we were done having kids and I said yes. He said "You never know...when you're 40, you might want another one"(that's what his wife did). I just said "yeah, I can see myself wanting another one" and left it at that. I did not tell him I CAN'T have another one. I just don't quite know how to deal with things like that. I get asked the question if I'm done having kids all the time. One person that knows I had the surgery asked me if I was done having kids.....well, I guess we know the answer to that one

Am I the only one dealing with questions and comments like this???

I get taht one all the time.

Only they say, aren't you at least going to try for a boy. We have 2 beautiful girls. Even the nurse doing my pre-op asked us that.
I just look at it this way, I am 27 and my baby is 2 so people just naturally assume we are still capable of having babies????
Just know that I am there with you :hair: !

I'm 6 weeks post op. Today at church an ederly lady asked how I was feeling. I told her great better than I had felt in a long time. Then she said, "I thought a hysterectomy was so you wouldn't have any more babies." I told her that is one of the results of a hysterectomy but not the reason for most hysterectomies.

This reminds me of the legal papers I had to sign for the doctor and hospital, one part said that I understand that after the surgery I MIGHT be sterile. I told the doctor if I'm not sterile after the surgery I AM SUING.

I remember at my pre op appointment that my doctor said "now I have to have you sign this paper that says you can't have any more babies". I laughed, but he said that I'd be surprised that some people don't realize what a hysterectomy really means...that you can't get pregnant!

I just turned 50 the week before my TAH/LSO.
I had not had a period for 9 mo. before I started bleeding for 6 wks.
I have a 25 yr. old son and have had two miscarriages since then and hubby had a vasectomy 17 yrs. ago.
My neighbor knew all of these details and she still asked me if I was sure I wanted the surgery because I could never have any more children. She was totally serious about this too.

At 50, I'm ready for the grandchildren.

I guess it doesn't matter how old you are, someone still has to ask that question.

I had a good laugh when I opened a card the week after my hysterectomy. An elderly neighbor had sent me a Sympathy card instead of a get well card.

Confused DH

Listen to this sisters.

DH asked me the other day -- when I get better do I want to try and have that girl I always wanted.

I just gave him the pamphlet that we received back in May when I found out that I needed to have this surgery. Obviously, when the DD was talking to us about the TAH he must have had his mind on the Carolina Panthers.

I think people in general just don't quite understand - or can't accept the finality of the surgery. Moreover, they don’t see the pro’s of the surgery. NO PAIN! NO MORE 8 DAY CYCLES!!

Yes, this question will always come up. But, it does not always have to be answered. Instead I throw the question back at them. So, when are you going to add more bundles of joy to your family?

Wow, Csharp!

You're right, alot of people just don't understand. I have a friend who asked me if I'd still have a period. This is a woman who has 4 kids...I would think she would know how all her female organs work!

To me it's all common knowledge, but I guess it's not

I've never wanted to have kids - very clear on that since I was 5 y/o, never wavered, no regrets about the hyst. So I was happy that now I've had a hyst I can shut those people up who were always pestering me about how I'd change my mind and want kids someday... "just wait, you'll see" they'd say. But even after I was permanently "childproofed" (to my great relief) I got cornered by a lovely old lady at a party who insisted that I *would* indeed change my mind and want kids one day, but not to worry - that I'd be able to adopt them. D'oh!

By the way, I just had dinner with a group of fiends who didn't all know each other. One is 2 weeks from her due date with her second kid. She looks like she is about ready to pop. After she left, one of the guys with us, who did not know her, asked me if she was pregnant. He said he sure thought so, but you never know, and he sure as heck wasn't going to say anything! After all the tales we hear here about pre- and post-op swelly-belly Sisters getting asked "when they are due" it was so nice to see that *someone* out there knows better than to say anything.

My husband and I were married 10 years ago. We both were married before and each of us had older children. We were always asked the question, "But don't you want to have one more together?"

I always replied with a smile, "No thank you, but you can have the honors."
