I need to share..........

Hello to all...I have been visiting this board on and off for about 2 years, believe it or not!! I found out today that I need a TAH. I have a very large fibroid (9.5x7.8cm) that is interfering with my bladder. I am ashamed to tell you that I cannot pass urine without using my finger to move the mass out of the way so I can urinate. The tumor grew fast within the past 6 months, so the matter is out of my hands. I have to do something. So now I am just waiting for the date to be set, it should be within 3 weeks. My doc wants me to give a pint of my own blood, she is concerned about the blood supply to this monster. I am also going to be on standby, in case of a cancellation I can be moved up.

I work for a Gyn(clinical medical assistant) so I see this all the time. But I am still terrified. I don't know what to expect. I work for a very small practice, so I am afraid I'll lose my job. I know my boss will be upset, but I can't help this, I wish I did'nt have to go through this. I am angry at myself because I think maybe I should have been more aggressive in doing something before it got to this. But I can see the struggles that most of you have had in your road to hysterectomy, so I know I am not alone.

I look forward to posting my surgery date and hope I will find some much needed help and support here. Thank you for reading this....Angela

Hi Angela and welcome!

I didn't have fibroids, but I've seen quite a few posts where women have talked about their fibroids growing and causing problems. Please don't feel ashamed as you have a legitimate medical problem and you are definitely not alone!

I'm sorry you're afraid for your job since you work in a small Practice. However, since you are employed by a GYN, I would hope that you will receive the compassion and understanding that you deserve.

When I had my hyst, I was given the option of donating some of my own blood, but was told by my Dr. that it would have to be at least 2 weeks prior to my surgery. Since you are looking at having a date set up quickly, you may want to donate right away if this is what you decide to do.

We'll be here with every step of the way.

Best wishes and s

Angela

Hi and welcome to a great site!!! I had a very large fibroid taken out 5 years ago. It took me 4 doctors and 2 years to finally find the beast. I dont know how big around it was, but it was over 6 pounds and I had to take lupron to shrink it so it would be operable. Even then, it only shrunk by half and was still size of small melon when they took it out. My path report came back good and I have since only had one more fibroid which is very small and not big enough to worry about. I did have a lot of pain with original fibroid though. Abdominal surgery was not as bad as I thought it would be then. I now have more problems with adhesions and go in on next Tuesday for my possible hysterecromy. As for your work, BECAUSE you work for a gyn. he should be very good about this because he knows EXACTLY what is going on with you. I worked in a factory and they were very good about my time off so long as I had papers from dr. to back it up. It may be a good idea to look at the family medical leave act (FMLA) laws in your area to see exactly what you are intitled too. Also check and see about any FMLA policies there are in place where you work. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Thank you all for your kind replies!! I got a date for my surgery today, it cannot be until Oct. 4-but that's just as well, lots of preparation before the big day!!

As for my boss-I called her this morning to tell her what was goung on-she, as I predicted, was not happy!! She does'nt understand why I am getting the TAH, and wants the doc I work for to check me out and give me a second opinion, she thinks he may be able to do it vaginally. My dilemma is, do I want my boss to know all of my personal history(I talked to him today, and told him about the urination problem) os just stick with my doc, who I know will do a TAH. So many issues!

Thanks again. I'll keep you posted!!

Oh Angela,
I don't blame you as far as not wanting boss to know Everything, that seems to be aconflict of interest to me. lol
I hope they just let you do what u need to do. Thank goodness you got a date that isnt too far away. I also waited 2 months to have mine, the time has flown by and I have only 4 more days left to wait. Take care and keep us informed.

Angela,

Please don't feel pressured into discussing details with anyone that you are not comfortable doing so with.

Since the Dr. who will be doing your surgery has decided that it will be safest to have it done abdominally as opposed to vaginally because of the risk of bleeding from your large fibroid, then there is no need for you to justify your decision to this woman in your office. Since your surgery is not until October, this should give her plenty of time to prepare for your absence.

Additionally, whether you have a TAH or a TVH, the initial recovery period will still be 6-8 weeks. Even though there is no external incision with a TVH, there are still as many internal stitches that will need time to heal.

Best wishes and s
