I didn't have to do a bowel prep either. I asked the dr - he gave me the choice. My answer - thanks but no thanks - phew!!!!!

All the best wishes for your surgery.

no bowel prep for me..

Hi!

I didn't have a bowel prep either. It seem's that they do that when cancer is involved or their is the possibility of problems with the colon itself. But, if at all possible, if you can have a bm before surgery you will be much better off!

Bowel Prep

Hi MrsIrvin ! I was told I didn't need a bowel prep either. However, after researching different articles about hyterectomy, some women did do it anyway to try and avoid any constipation probems after surgery. My co-worker had her surgery 3 wks. before me (she @ 4 wks. now) and she has all kinds of problems still and one is constipation. I went ahead and did an enema the morning of surgery to avoid this problem and so I wouldn't have a BM so soon and have to strain and deal with that pain on top of incision pain. You know? Remember also that Pain Meds. are known for causing constipation. Well to my surprise even though they told me I didn't need to prep, once I got to the castle and they were prepping me, Guess what they told me? I was going to have 2 enemas and 2 douches. I only did 1 enema though since I had already done 1 @ home. Well this is just my thought and experience. Good Luck.

That's another good reason NOT to do any type of prep that is not specifically ordered. If your DR doesn't order a bowel prep ASK before you go ahead and do it anyway. You can cause complications or even postponement of your surgery by not following your DR's instructions to the letter.

Every DR is different with his/her instructions for the night before, your DR knows your case and what his/her preferences are for surgery prep.

FYI: laxatives and enemas cause dehydration, which contributes to constipation, another good reason to avoid them if you can. After surgery drink lots of water and juice and walk as much as possible to get things working again!

Best wishes!
