Taste Buds

Hi Ladies -

I had my TAH/BSO 2 weeks ago and I'm doing pretty good. My question is for my mother. Two months ago during surgery to repair a hernia they found several tumors that turned out to be stage 3C ovarian cancer. She's had 2 round of chemo and has noticed that food (even water) has a bad taste now. Has anyone else experienced that? Is there any remedy?

Also, I just love the hystersisters would this be a good site to recommend for my mother to join? Or is it just for hysterectomys?

Strange Tasting Things--for Mom

This is not that uncommon with certain chemos. Some people have it briefly and for some it goes on for a while--one of those "everyone responds differently" situations. During 01 taxol/carbo I had one instance where for two days everything tasted like dirt. This year on first carboplatin, I had a brief time where I had a metallic taste. I hope that it will disappear within a day or so after chemo for your mom. If not, just have her try different foods until she finds some that taste OK to her and let her have those. And...your mom is totally welcome here! Definitely! She'll find some very wonderful, helpful women. to her.

s Vicki

That metallic sorta coppery taste is very common with taxol and carboplatin. Some people say sucking on hard candy helps. It will definitely go away. We'd love to have your mom visit. Tell her how good we are at support, info and hugs. In the meantime, my best to you both.

Taste Buds

Having a change in your taste buds is totally normal for chemotherapy -- when I was getting carboplatin/Taxol, I could only eat applesauce, Pepsi, and fried eggs -- everything else tasted yucky (and I don't like Pepsi or fried eggs, normally). At the time, I talked to a nurse about it and she told me to just eat what tasted good and not to worry too much about it. It eventually got better as I went through the chemo. Also, your mother is more than welcome here -- there are a lot of wonderful ladies here who are more than happy to give support and advice.

Hi Vicki
I too have ovarian cancer and will be finishing my last treatment next thursday. I am taking taxol and carboplatim... Is your mom being treated with those also. I ask because the carbo does cause a metalicy taste in my mouth for a few days after the treatment and then it goes away.
Hope all else is well.
