Upcoming hysterectomy May 1st: need specifics re 1st BM post surgery

I wasn't able to post this in the post hysterectomy section because I'm not post hysterectomy so I hope this is ok here and that some ladies who've already been through this can answer

I'm scheduled for my TAH/BSO on Monday. Tomorrow is my pre-op appointment and I have all of my questions ready to go. But something that is going to be difficult for anyone to answer (that hasn't gone through it themselves) is my question about the first or so bowel movements after surgery.

I see a lot of posts about getting things going again (helfpul!!) but I haven't seen much about the kind of pain this produces. Is it abdominal pain from straining? Is it pain from stretching the anus with a hard movement? Or is it something else?

I'm hoping not to have many issues in this department but...you know what they say about the best laid plans

Re: Need more specifics re: 1st BM post hysterectomy

You never know. My first BM after surgery was a piece the size of a quarter that emerged after a Fleet enema. The hospital wanted this to happen before they would release me.

My next BMs occurred the next day and were diarrhetic!

I'm hoping to avoid an enema but of course, since I don't want one, I'll probably have to have one

Is it wrong to wish for diarrhoea?

The enema was quick and painless. :-) Make sure a nurse sees the results before you flush them. I flushed first. The nurse was not happy.

Given all the stories I've heard about people being miserable with constipation, no, I don't think it's wrong to wish for diarrhea. Mine was easily dealt with. It went away after several cups of plain yogurt with active cultures.

I definitely don't want to be miserable with constipation...I figure I'll already be miserable enough

hitherto

Everyone is different with this (as SurprisedinNB mentioned). The key is knowing your go-tos (like coffee has always been mine) then incorporating them into your diet during the early weeks of recovery. Especially as the tummy and digestive tract can be sluggish from not liking the bumping or pushing it endured during surgery.

You will want to take short walks from your resting spot to the kitchen or bathroom and back again. Drink tons of water. Try eating items that are fiber-rich like oatmeal, whole grain cereals or breads, or even apples, pears, plums. Incorporating foods that have magnesium might help also such as fish, nuts, dark leafy greens, avocados, bananas and dark chocolate.

In my case, any BMs were normal-ish until I started to get a better grip on the things that I ate.

Getting prepared for things ahead is a good idea even in making sure you have any needed items around you or can give someone a small list to run out and get.

You will do good sweetie. There are sisters around that can help at any time.

Re: Need more specifics re: 1st BM post hysterectomy

Hi - I was worried about this too!

They started me on stool softeners and gas X post op. It's hard to explain, and yes, everyone is different. For me....they did do a suppository the day after before I went home. It's more of a pressure... passing the gas helps. Once home I began softeners twice a day. I have also used milk if magnesia a couple of times to help. The mom did cause a little cramping and diarrhea, but for me that was better than constipation.

Drink lots of water and get up and start walking as soon as you can. My surgery was 4/10 and though I'm not really constipated, I'm still not quite 100% in this department. Hope this helps a little.

Best of luck to you!!

Re: Need more specifics re: 1st BM post hysterectomy

Thanks Lisa Rene,

I'm planning to be all about fiber, water and walking! Hoping I won't need softeners but not ruling them out either. Also plan to eat very light in the next few days with the hopes no heavy meals will help too.

Exactly what I was looking for sandi47!

I was wondering what type of pain I might experience ie: cramping feeling, sharp pains or "oh my gosh, my insides are falling out" pain. I know everyone must be different and feel pain differently but I was hoping to at least get an idea of the range of pain types and of where the pain was (tummy, rectum etc), if that makes sense

I really think that you're unlikely to be miserable. I was sure I would be, but awoke feeling surprisingly good. I didn't have a problem with constipation, I'm guessing that it was probably due to bowel prep prior and no narcotics after. I didn't experience anything abnormal when having BMs. If I do get constipation, lots of water, lots of walking combined with eating fiber helps me. Hope you have a smooth recovery!
