Pre-OP bowel prep

I had surgery on 8/15/02 and this is my first post. I will tell you that life on this side is 500 times better than pre-surgery. I was scared, confused, depressed and had a lot of doubts. To make matters worse, I had a decent period the week before(not as much bleeding) which made me wonder if surgery was the right choice. But now that is in the past, and I'm into recovering now.
I want to tell people getting ready for surgery what my doctor told me about pre-op bowel prep. I asked him in my pre-op appt. if I should bring some Gas-X to the hospital because I heard that the gas after surgery was painful. First he told me that the anti-gas medication at the hospital is better than anything you can get "over the counter". Then he told me that if I followed the bowel prep(clear liquids only and an enema) that I should not have a gas problem. He said that if he sees a "flat bowel" during surgery, he knows that the patient will not have a gas problem. I guess this makes sense because your bowels shutdown after surgery and anything left in them - like a big meal - has no where to go.
So the day before surgery I had only clear liquids - and I thought about food all day ! But I kept thinking " I want a flat bowel, I want a flat bowel"...and that kept me going. Hope that this helps.

Pre-OP bowel prep

Thanks so much for taking the time to come back and inform all of us. So good to hear that your hysterectomy was a good choice and you are doing well.

Can you expand alittle on the types of liquids you drank all day? I love iced tea...but all day would be too much. Broth? yuk! OJ causes gas. And none of those are clear. What's clear besides water and 7-up? And carbinated drinks wouldn't be good. Any good ideas?

Thanks againkasio

Pre-OP bowel prep

I'm still a "lady in waiting" and haven't had my hysterectomy yet, but I remember when I had my C-sections that tea and broth were considered "clear liquids" on my hospital menu. I think as long as it isn't cream- or milk-based, it is a clear liquid. If I remember correctly, even jello was on there (as well as apple, grape, and cranberry juices.) It's always best to ask your doctor what he recommends, though.

Clear liquids

OK, clear liquids (the instructions we give when we discharge patients from the emergency department) are anything that is liquid at room temp. and you can see through. So... broth (personally I enjoy the canned Sue Bee Chicken broth), jello, popcicles, strained grape or apple juice. Hope that helps some.

Pre-OP bowel prep

Unfortunately, I have no recommendations. I started the day drinking coffee with sugar but no cream. The rest of the day I ate jello and drank clear juices like grape or cranberry. I don't like broth but boy did it taste good when I had it for "dinner". Of course, the whole time I was drinking it I thought,"this would sure taste good on noodles!" That was the worse day for me. I actually wanted to hurry up and have the surgery so that I could eat again.

Pre-OP bowel prep

I dreaded liquid diet the day before my surgery and wasn't quite sure how I'd make it through a whole day not eating. But I made myself several flavors of "finger jello" (jello with added gelatin). I just ate those all day. That helped assuage the hunger pains.

Pre-OP bowel prep

I just returned today from my pre-op visit, with a list of "Clear Liquids" for bowel prep in hand:

Juice (grape, apple, cranberry)
Soft drinks
Beef Broth

I guess each Drs. list could be different -- but this is mine! I am left wondering why it lists specifically beef broth and not chicken... will probably ask about that before my day of clear liquid fasting, cause I'd surely prefer chicken.

All the best to the LIWs who have a day of liquids and bowel prep ahead.

Pre-OP bowel prep

Are clear liquids really necessary the day before?? I am scheduled to go in to see my DR on the 17th and to preregister at the hospital and the 18th is surgery. He said nothing about what to or not eat... Only said nothing after midnight and do the enema thing that night....

Anna, you actually got a list! Maybe it should be posted at the pull down menu site. I'm pressing PRINT. Thanks

Madeline, finger jello is cool..I could do that! cracked me up! I can relate. Keep up the good recovery. You started this whole thing and we'll all remember,"flat bowel"!

Miss Diane you and the rest are wonderful. Thank you for all the information. I know "clear liquids" is not fun but you girls just made it a major food group for me!

Pre-OP bowel prep

My doctor did not tell me about a clear liquid diet the day before and I didn't have an enema the night before. In fact my preop instructions were that I could have a regular meal for dinner and nothing after midnight unless I got up at 6am and I could have a little tea and toast (dry). Well I was sleeping and I wasn't going to get up at 6am to eat and then worry for the next three hours before I had to leave for the hospital.

I do know that I was a little constipated when I went to the hospital cause I was taking iron for my anemia before the surgery and so the morning after surgery I was miserable. I had them give me a glass of apple juice and that started me up fast. But I must say that it is hard to walk fast to the bathroom the day after surgery for that little problem.

I think that if I ever had to do this again, I would eat light the day before and save me the problems after.
