Friends--I Got a Miracle.
When I went yesterday again the white cells/neutrophils were really too low and I just said "that's it. Physically and mentally, I can't do this any more." By the time the Dr. came in (this was with the RN practitioner) I was just lying there crying. I said no more chemo. Stop. He said he could lower the dose on the carboplatin vs. my quitting BUT...Neupogen looms on the Friday horizon, HMO paying or not--they have to pre-authorize. Well, I've looked and Neupogen can cause lots of problems--mostly bone pain, sometimes not bad--sometimes bad. So, I called back the RN practitioner in the p.m. still crying to ask more about Neupogen. She said they ran the CA125 test in the hospital lab that day (Tuesday and Thursday) and did I want to know mine. I was hoping, as was the doctor, that it would show a slowing down of the rise, as I do continue to be symptomatic and even a bit more so than before, or a leveling off at 161, where it had quadrupled in one month from 38, and in the two prior months it'd quintupled from 8 to 38. We got our miracle--it is 35.4! I am .4 above "normal" on one carboplatin--so clearly for now I am platinum sensitive and while it it taking a tremendous toll on the white cells (and a toll on red, but not so bad yet) and on me mentally, carboplatin does seem to be working at this point. Since carboplatin is the ONLY drug I would use again it looks as if I'll be hanging in there for a while longer. Nurse said Dr. was astounded as was she and my mouth just fell open. Now, let's hope the Neupogen gives me the least side effects, the HMO pays, I don't have to give them to myself, and this will last for a while. Yep--I think we have to consider this a miracle. Now if the Zofran would kick in (feeling queasy) and those symptoms go away...
