For those that have had rectal repair done with the hysterectomy, how did you know you needed it done.:confuse: Without getting to graphic, I leak out of there if you know what I mean. Would that be cause for repair??

rectum repair

Hi Jennifer,

Please don't be about it. I had a repair done for a rectocele which is a prolapse of your bowel. In my case, and this is definitely pretty blunt, the bulge was so bad that it was pushing onto the wall of my vagina and I had to reach inside of my vagina and push on the wall of it to force the bowel to "un-bulge" so that I could have a BM. (Sorry)

I would definitely mention the leaking to your doctor and see what he thinks it might be, and whether it can be taken care of at the same time as your surgery.

rectum repair

Jennifer,
I've had the same "leaking" problem for years and will be having a hemmerhoidectomy(sp?) and some other kind of repair done at the same time of my hysto. I'm hoping that these will take care of the leakage problem. I have some sort of a lump/opening in my rectum wall that needs to be checked out and repaired. My doctor (surgeon, not gyno) thinks that is where the leaking is coming from. We'll find out on 10/16. Can't wait until it's all over!

Jennifer,
It IS disgusting, isn't it?!! I can't wait to not have to take a shower every time I have a BM! I'm not sure how they would repair this, but for me they will remove the lump and close the opening in the rectal wall and also remove the hemmerhoid(s) in hopes that this will solve the problems. Ugh. Can't wait to be done with all of this.

I havetn done anything about it yet cause I can just see it now. I call tricare to make the appt and they ask "whats the reason for the appt?" And I have to say "I have a leaky rectum" I would be mortified.... I laugh thinking about the expression the ladies face making the appt.

Jennifer,
They've heard it all before. You can just tell them that you are having some rectal problems or something vague like that and they should just make the appointment for you. I can totally relate to your concerns though. The nurse that got me set up for my appointment told me that she loved the doctors there and would let them do anything, but "I'll never let them look up my butt!!". I was kind of surprised and embarrassed but the doctor was great about keeping things from getting embarrassing for me. It's worth it in the long run.

I may be a lil nuts here, but is it possible for you to tuck a Tucks pad against your rectum and periodically remove and wipe? I'd carry a baggie with me everywhere I went. But I am not sure how bad your leakage is since I have been constipated most of my life.

Karen, how bad was the rectocele?? I had a vulvectomy on Valentine's Day '01 and that was worse than the tvh, the abdominal ovary removals, the burch and the endo all together!! My gyn says that the rectocele repair is 10x worse than the vulvectomy. Nothing can be that bad but Hell itself!!!! Please tell me it wasn't so awful!!!! I might run away!! Mine is just as bad as yours was, fingers and all, though I find the thumb more comfortable (sorry!)

Hi Debbie,

Your Gyn sure wasn't very reassuring, was he? Since I haven't had a vulvectomy (and I'm very sorry that you had to have one ) it's kind of hard to compare, but I thought the rectocele felt very similar to an episiotomy. It was painful, yes, but not unbearably so. I did use Tucks to soothe the area (although I didn't leave them on for very long at a time), and I sat on a donut pillow for several weeks.

Please be sure to ask him for pain meds, and a stool softener, too, because the one thing that you DO NOT want to do, is to have to strain.

Have you set a date yet for the surgery, Debbie? Please be sure to keep me posted on how you are doing.

rectum repair

Hi Jennifer! I'm having a TAH/BSO on Oct. 31st. I have severe endo. that my dr. told me was on my rectum as well. I don't have the leaks but I have blood in my stool and severe back pain. My dr. told me I have to have a colonoscopy before my hyst. (Oct. 21st) to see if I need to have my bowel repaired. He said there's a possibility that the endo. has grown so far into my bowel that it's penetrated it. Maybe you can talk to your dr. to see if he suggests a colonoscopy for you? I know I'd rather get it all done at once! I'm not familiar with how they would repair it, I guess I'll freak out about that when the time comes !

Good luck!
