Cyst doesn't cause pain????? That's what my dr. says
I have a cyst on my left ovary, but I do not know the size. My dr. says the cyst does not cause pain except around the time I have my period. I think this is bull but he says it shouldn't cause pain any other time. If you had a cyst on an ovary, did it hurt a lot or only around that time of the month?

Cyst doesn't cause pain????? That's what my dr. says
I would imagine it depends on what type of cyst it is?? When I had my hysterectomy, the pathology report showed that I had a small cyst on each ovary, which had gone undiagnosed prior to my hyst. I had no chronic pain from ovaries---my pain was fibroid related....although, remembering back, when I had a period my left ovary always hurt.
Did your doctor tell you what type of cyst it is and why it should not cause pain? I would be curious as to how big it is also. The other thing, if you are not comfortable with the answers you are getting from him, you might consider a second opinion.
I hope this helps.

cyst
I have a cyst that is about 6" in size and is more painful with menstration. However, it still hurts at other times. My doctor didn't say that this was unusual. You could have some scar tissue as well which can definitely hurt- especially if it is stuck to your bowel.
My surgery is scheduled for one month and I cannot wait to get rid of the uterus and ovary.

cysts hurt
Maybe the MD meant that cysts don't have nerves in them and therefore don't hurt of themselves, but I sure feel pain from the crowding they cause! It's worst when I was having my period (I just had my last one, yaaaay) or when my bowels are busy. It gets worse the bigger they get. Hope this helps.

oh, now I am mad again!!!!!!
I compained to my gyne of ovulatory pain and about 4x from Sept to February right before my cycle I would go down, literally, due to this excruciating pain. I know all too well the pain a cyst itself can cause and also what it feels like when they rupture. He had 2 ultrasounds done 2 months apart and in April told me he had no clue what was causing my pain but the cyst on ultrasound wasn't of size enough to be causing the kind of pain I complained of. And his biggest mistake was saying"these cysts won't hurt you", well- I raged on..........I am 2 weeks post on Tuesday and there was more wrong than I care to mention- (read below)- but at 1 week post after path came back- all was benign, they found adenomysis, and >>>>>>>>>>>a cyst inside the fallopian tube!!!! So- you know your pain and get answers, good ones. Keep fighting for yourself- noone else is gonna do it for you and there is only one you!!!!!!!! Love, Julie

Cyst doesn't cause pain????? That's what my dr. says
JulieS,
I noticed in your signature that you had endo. as well. Did you know this before your hysterectomy? Or did the dr. find it before hand? I had the laparoscopy done last week and the dr. says there was no sign of endo. that he could see, but this also comes from the same doctor that told me a cyst should not hurt and that cervicitis shouldn't either. Although the definition for cervicitis is inflammation in the cervix, and I don't know how inflammation in the cervix could not cause some pain. Please email me privately or re post here and let me know what things your doctor did find before your hysterectomy. I have had some women say the endo was not discovered until the path. found it after the hysterectomy, and then there was also adenomyosis present as well. Please tell me if that was your case or not as well TIA

Cyst doesn't cause pain????? That's what my dr. says
You don't sound too confident about your Dr. Have you considered getting a second opinion? I personally think it would be a very good idea. I know I wanted a Dr. I had alot of confidence and trust in to do my surgery.
btw my Dr was very surprised that my cyst did not cause any pain. I guess there are different kinds. I don't know.

Cyst doesn't cause pain????? That's what my dr. says
HI,
Actually I have a back up appointment on 10/15 with another doctor if I cannot seem to get some relief through my current doctor. I made the appointment a month ago just in case. I see my doctor this Wednesday and that may be the last time I see him if he doesn't start acting at least a little concerned about the pain I am in.
Thanks for your advice

Cyst doesn't cause pain????? That's what my dr. says
Sister,
Throughout the years, I have had numerous cysts-and the only way that they were detected, each time......was because I was in PAIN....and it wasn't near my period time! Of course, I was also told by my male GYN that having a colposcopy wouldn't hurt a bit and that the cervix is a "dead" organ...UM, you've got dysplasia, like I do........did YOU feel NOTHING when you had a colp? Hmmm sometimes I wonder about dr's.!

Cyst doesn't cause pain????? That's what my dr. says
The doctor who is telling you that "cysts don't hurt" is possibly thinking of corpus luteum cysts, which are functional cysts that swell up when you release an egg each month. Cysts can cause pain for many reasons, like compressing on nerves nearby as they grow, or when they rupture, or because they are "torquing" the tube in some way, etc.
Frankly, I'd have a hard time returning to any doctor who denies your report of pelvic pain. The latest statistics on endometriosis that I've read, BTW, state that the average time between onset of symptoms and actual diagnosis of endo is ten years!!!
Endo can go undiscovered during laparoscopy for a number of reasons, ranging from the timing of surgery with your cycle to the skill of the surgeon. Some of them don't look behind the uterus in the cul-de-sac for implants...and some implants can be microscopic and impossible to see until during your period...I scheduled my last diagnostic laparoscopy for during my period for this very reason, and it helped make the implants easier to see.
Honestly, JMHO here, but even if you are totally satisfied with your next doctor visit, I would still keep this second appointment. Pelvic pain should not be ignored, especially in the face of cysts.
Here's hoping for some REAL answers for you in the near future.
Audrey
