ca125 number

Am scheduled for BSO this week, but am concerned because my CA125 came in at 61. The first one I had was 29 a few weeks ago, but now on the rise. My gyn is "consulting" with an oncologist/gyn but doesn't seem too concerned. I wonder how he would feel if it were his wife!! I have a 1.8 cm complex cyst plus a 4 cm fibroid on the outside of my uterus. Should I be concerned about cancer??

ca125 and BSO

Hi Taffy....This would be my way of thinking about your ca125 number and i think my oncologist would feel the same way.. YOUR number has more than doubled, maybe there is something to seriously take a look at. MY oncologist says, and all others agree, 35 is the "normal" number and anything under 20 is excellent. However, everyone's baseline number is different. After all the chemo treatments my baseline number is now 11. MY oncologist says that if that number should rise a few points she would not be concerned because there is always a margin error in reading the number,,, However, if the number should double she would be on the lookout. Hope i am not scaring you but i would want to know this information. Hope all works out.

s Taffy

Welcome to Cancer Concerns. I think whenever we undergo surgery and there have been some abnormal findings pre op, we tend to worry about cancer. That's just the human way.
Are you having the BSO because of the complex cyst?
You said that your doc is going to consult with a gyn oncologist. That is good, but I wish you were the one doing the consulting. If you are the least bit uncomfortable with your situation, don't hesitate to demand to see the gyn oncologist yourself. They are the experts on gyn cancers.
Best wishes to you. Please let us know how everything goes.

Hi Taffy!

I'm glad your Dr is going to consult but as Karen mentioned, you may also want to consult with the Gyn Oncologist yourself as well. Always a good idea to talk to the experts.

From what I've been told and what I've read about the CA125 test, there are many things that can affect the readings. This test measures a protein that can rise in "some" Ovarian cancers, however this protein can also raise from other conditions such as Endometriosis. This is why its so important to check into things thoroughly, which it sounds like your physician is doing.

I hope everything turns out good for you and the rise in the numbers is nothing to worry about.

Please keep us posted on how things go for you. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

{{hugs}}
