Upcoming February 12 hysterectomy, unsure of type (anyone experience change in surgery type from lap to TAH?)

Hi everyone,

I may be the first February appointment scheduled. 7:30am 2/12/18. I'm not really nervous about the surgery, more so about the anesthesia, gas pains, and recovery. Not sure if I'm having LTH, w/ BS, or TAH w/ BS, and wont know until I wake up. Doc will try Laparoscopic first and change mid-surgery if he can't.
Anyone have any experience with doc having to change the type of surgery from laparoscopic to abdominal during the procedure?

Re: February 12 Surgery, unsure of type until completion

Hi PotterBook to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

My surgery was always going to be a TAH BSO, so I cannot really help you with the procedural change mid-surgery.

It is normal to be worried about going under anesthesia. The doctors and nurses will watch over you very carefully and monitor you closely. Probably at no other time are you the center of such attention. Here is some information on anesthetic:
Anesthesia | Does Hysterectomy Type Affect Anesthesia Options?
Anesthesia | What Are the Different Types?

Recovery is different for everyone. But this is MAJOR SURGERY, and no matter the type, you will have much internal healing to do. You do need to think in terms of weeks and not days: Hysterectomy Recovery Time.

Because I had a TAH BSO, I cannot speak to the gas pains that come with laparoscopic hysterectomy, but here is an article: CO2 Gas Relief after Laparoscopic Hysterectomy.

We do have lots of ladies on this site, so hopefully one that has experienced a switch in procedure will see this post and respond.
