Upcoming hysterectomy 4/26: Menopausal symptoms pre-op. Keeping ovaries? help

I am having a hysterectomy, next month. My OB is really pushing me to leave my ovaries in, but removing my uterus & tubes. I have had a lot of issues since i had the Essure procedure. including heavy long periods, bleeding between periods, intense pain, terrible mood swings where i feel like im going crazy, ovarian cysts(they are removing the cysts), headaches, & all the menopausal symptoms. I had the Essure at 32. I am now 40. I have experienced hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia etc..along with heavy bleeding& long painful periods lasting 9 days to a month with 10-15 day break in between- the menopause symptoms come on with 'pms'.. but, theres no rhyme or reason to it- for 8yrs. I am seriously wondering why she wants to keep my ovaries, & if so- how will i know when they start to shut down? Will this speed up the process? I am a huge hormonal mess already..

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/26: Menopausal symptoms pre-op. Keeping ovaries? help

Ovaries provide benefits even after a woman enters menopause. They still produce hormones but in lower quantities. They help with bone strength, cognitive function and heart health just to name a few. Taking out your ovaries will throw you straight into surgical menopause, which from what I hear is no fun at all. I am 51 and opted to keep mine as there is no history of ovarian cancer in my family and I was not showing any signs of entering menopause yet. I would rather enter menopause naturally and deal with whatever that brings.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/26: Menopausal symptoms pre-op. Keeping ovaries? help

and . Our ovaries continue to produce hormones after we reach menopause, albeit in ever-decreasing amounts. Still, that "dribble effect" of our own hormones in our bodies provides benefits which are harder to match with HRT. Our article What Ovarian Hormones Do for You gives the run-down, along with its counterpart, 25 Health Risks Related to Oophorectomy and Surgical Menopause. It sounds like your doctor supports this current thinking of our ovarian function.

Having said that, keeping your ovaries doesn't stop them from declining in their function. Many women who keep them opt for HRT to not only help with symptoms, but to address the various risks of hormonal imbalance, such as bone density.

Whether or not you keep your ovaries, the trick to HRT is finding a regimen that works for you, as it's not one size fits all. There are many approaches, several delivery systems, and tailoring them to your body's needs can be a matter of trial and error.

Research our Menopause & Hormones Articles (especially under Hormones, Hormone Delivery, HRT, & HRT Alternatives). You've got time to weigh your options. It's a personal decision, and no matter what you decide, we'll be here to support you.
