Getting a second opinion is always a good idea. Did they say why they were taking the ovaries? Is the mass on your ovary? Could they leave one? Could you make another appointment to ask some more questions about the procedure you will be having?

Yeah it shouldn’t be just because you’re done having kids. I would ask for a second opinion and explain in pre-op how important your ovaries are to you. Do you meet with your Dr at your Pre-op? (I had to make a separate appointment - and you may need to push to see your surgeon.)

Hi Sigshair to HysterSisters!

I am sorry you are going through this, but I am so glad you found this site.

A "complete hysterectomy", also known as a "total hysterectomy", means they are removing both the uterus and cervix, which is the neck of the uterus. The surgery for ovary removal is called oopherectomy and is identified separately. Here is a page that provides information:
Hysterectomy Definition

Is the mass on your ovary? If so, they may want to take the ovary that has the mass. But, if you can keep it or your healthy ovary that would be good. Here are articles that may help:
Should I Keep My Healthy Ovary?
Should I Keep My Ovaries if I Am Near Menopause?
Should I Keep My Ovaries When I Have My Hysterectomy?
25 Health Risks Related to Oophorectomy and Surgical Menopause
HRT, Heart Disease, and Surgical Menopause

I was rudely dumped into surgical menopause at age 46 when I lost everything (uterus, cervix, tubes and ovaries) - no choice for me. It was MISERABLE. My GP put me on HRT and it gave me my life back. But, it is not the same as my own hormones and if I could have I would have kept one or both ovaries.

The choice is yours as to whether or not you cancel your surgery, and get alternate opinions on your condition. You need to make the right decision for you.
