Gallbladder, No Stones?

I would like to begin by thanking all of you for the invaluable information that I have received in reading the posts on this board.
My question is regarding gallbladder symptoms. My symptoms are very similar to what I have read in other posts pain in right rib area and back, at times extreme and at times just there. I have had an ultrasound and there were no stones. The technician said that the areas that were the most sensitive were where the gallbladder is positioned. For those of you that have had Nonfunctioning gallbladders are the symptoms the same or similar to having stones? Was the gallbladder inflamed? I am healing up great from my TAH/BSO but I can't seem to shake this pain. I plan to ask my doctor to schedule a HIDA scan next week if I have no relief. I would appreciate any information.

pain in the rib

I know how your feeling about the gallbladder problem, before I found out that I needed my hysterectomy, I was going to a specialist for my gallbladder problems, I have had ultra sounds, but for some reason they couldnt even see my gallbladder, I havent been back to the doctor for this yet I go in Dec 11, but the pain is so bad the only way I can explain it to anyone is that it is worse then back labor, I fear every spell I have with it, and the only way I can get past it is to take over the amount of sleeping pills a pray that I can fall asleep, because their are times it doesnt matter what I take the pain is so bad I cant fall asleep, but if im lucky enough that I do, usually when I wake up the pain is gone, now I dont recommend taking sleeping pills but thats the only way I can make it through it, Ive been dealing with this pain for about 14 years now, so ive been through allot with it, I hope you will find the help you need and dont do like I did and wait for so long for the help.

Gallbladder, No Stones?

I had my gall bladder out about 10 years before the hysterectomy. But, they never did any stones. By the time they took mine out it was *hot* and it was emergency surgery. It was full of what they call full that it couldn't contract. I don't remember the name of the test, but they did something in nuclear medicine to visualize the gall bladder and its contractions. That test can help determine if your gall bladder is functioning properly.

Gallbladder, No Stones?

Hi Peve:

I am so sorry that you are experiencing all of this pain. I do know how you are feeling. I had problems with mine about 12 years ago. Lots of pain, lots of nausea, couldn't keep much of anything down. Lost way too much weight. Ultra sound found no stones so they did a HYDA scan with some kind of dye. This checks the function of the gall bladder. Mine was not functioning at all. I felt almost immediate relief after lap. surgery to remove the gall bladder.

I hope you find relief soon. Please let us know how you are doing.

Gallbladder, No Stones?

I just posted about the gallbladder scan I just had done Friday, It is a HIDA scan to check the gallbladders function. Mine was a total nightmare and it made me very sick!!

I also have the upper right sided pain that goes to my shoulder and back. I am constantly sick to my stomach and am on Phenergan but it is not helping much anymore. My pain is almost always there and if I take my pain meds like I am suppose to I only have a burning aching feeling there. It gets really bad after I eat.

I will find out the results of the HIDA scan tomorrow when I go back to the General Surgeon to hear the verdict. If it is not my gallbladder I am headed for the Upper GI. OH what fun!!

The radiologist took about 30 minutes to explain the different problems with the gallbladder (I guess he ate his lunch really fast and had time to spare..) and you CAN definetly have a non-functioning gallbladder without stones. In fact he told me that 20% of gallbladder sufferers have NO stones at all and have chronic gallbladder pain and infection.

I will let you know what he says tomorrow as I know there was NO stones in mine.

Good luch and I will keep you in my prayers!!

Gallbladder, No Stones?

I too had approx 1 year of trouble with my gallbladder, and had all the tests to check for stones and function. All of my tests were within "normal" limits, with the exception of "sludge". However, I couldn't eat ANYTHING without having excrutiating pain and then vomiting. After exhausting all avenues, surgeon decided to "go on in" and take a look at the gallbladder. Turns out that gallbladder was infected, had numerous adhesions from recurrent infections, and was a mess. They called it "acalculous cholysistitis (sp?) ... Had no stones.

Haven't had any problems since removal.

Good luck !
