It looks like I may have a Fistula :(

Hello Dear Sisters,

I finally did the tampon test yesterday - as per my dr's instructions. Here's what happened...I had it in place for over 3 hours, and then removed it. The tampon was soaking wet with urine. I'm pretty sure it was urine...as I do not have any sort of discharge going on...and things are well a little dry down there at the moment (except for the dribbling).

Get this! I e-mailed my doc at the pain clinic last night, and he just e-mailed me back. This guy is amazing, and very approachable - Thank God. He said that this may indicate a fistula (Vesico-vaginal). He said to continue with no sex with dh (That's okay as it doesn't happen very often)...he said not to put anymore tampons in...and hopefully we'll learn more when I see the Uro-Gyn next month.

So...I had my hopes up pretty high after I saw the Endo specialist that I did not have a fistula. That doc did an internal and felt it was just a flap...resulting from the hyst...but he wanted me to do this test because of the dribbling. There was also a small amount of blood on the tampon

Thanks for hearing me ramble dear sisters. I guess we'll know more next month. I also want to say "Do not try this on your own." I was told by my doc to do this....if any of you lovely ladies suspect this is going on with you...please consult your doc asap.

Sending you all lots of Love and many S

((((Jude)))))) I'm so sorry you've failed yet another test I was sooooo hoping it wouldn't be a fistula.

Is there any chance you can get in sooner with uro-gyn (I know how these things work in the canadian system.... slow ) Still, it sounds like a long time to wait for something that seemingly needs immediate attention.

Sending tons of s.

Hi there stranger...

(((JUDY)))

Long time no talk to. Just wanted to send many 's your way and to let you know it will get better. Don't know if you remember me or not from last year. I went through the same thing. And here a year later I can say that it's somewhat better (the leaking is gone, but other stuff going on).

I hope you get the help you so deserve and soon. Please keep us posted and if ya ever want to talk, email me at [email protected] .

Again, many many 's and my er's are with ya.

awww Judester.....

Huge

I have to agree with Dany here........I would insist they get you in sooner..a month is a heck of a long time to go with this and not a good thing at all.

Won't you call and see if they can get you in sooner or notify you of a cancellation? Please do so...

I'm sending massive and saying a few prayers for ya!!! I know having something like this is scarey and keeps ya wondering "what else'.

Love ya.....

It looks like I may have a Fistula :(

A big heart felt thanks to all of my sisters to replied I have called and asked to be put on the cancellation list...so we'll see what happens. Thanks for reminding me to do that! Sometimes I forget to think of these things for myself LOL!

I'm hoping that perhaps I didn't do the test right. I have heard (read) from other sisters in the past that there is a special kind of 'tampon' that is a better test...at least I 'think' I remember reading about this

((((Darlene)))) You bet I remember you! I'm glad that your leaking is gone...but sad to read that you have other things happening. Please feel free to e-mail me anytime, if you want to chat or need a shoulder.

Thanks and big S being sent to each of you...xo Jude

There isn't a special kind of tampon that is used. What they usually do is have you take pyridium so that the urine is colored. That way there is no question that the fluid absorbed by the tampon is urine. The alternative, if you have a foley is to inject dye in the bladder through the catheter. Its a pretty blue dye <g>. That test works if you have a vesicovaginal fistula (a false passageway between the bladder and the vagina) If you have ureterovaginal fistula (a false passageway between the ureter and the vagina) the tampons will not stain.

Vesicovaginal fistulas can mend on their own, but it doesn't happen often. The usual course of treatment is a foley catheter for some weeks to see if it heals.

In either case it is possible to have urine collect in the abdomen, which can be dangerous. Definitely try getting into the urogyno earlier. I know you asked to be on the cancellation list, but did you tell them that you might have a fistula and it isn't being treated? It might get you in earlier.

Good luck, and feel free to join us in the post op forum under the thread vaginal urination. There are about half a dozen of us posting to that thread with fistulas.

Lots of hugs,
Ariel

It looks like I may have a Fistula :(

Hello Ariel,

Thanks for the information on the fistula's as well as the tampon test...I truly appreciate your help.

Yes, the only reason why I called the Uro-Gyn was as a result of me doing the tampon test. I explained everything to the dr's assistant/secretary...and she said that they would do their best to get me in earlier.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction to that thread in Post-Op...I also want to thank Linda for pointing me there. I will certainly check out this thread.

This is a stupid question...but how would one know if urine is collecting in the abdomen?

Thanks & S

It looks like I may have a Fistula :(

I developed a large pocket of it that was drained during surgery. They felt it during a manual exam of the abdomen. From what I've read it can lead to peritonitis, though it is rare.

Unfortunatey I gathered this knowledge the hard way. I had a ureterovaginal fistula that was repaired a few weeks ago. I never would have made it through this far without the support of the wonderful women who are also suffering with a fistula.

Lots of hugs,
Ariel
