Not sure whats best to do - any guidance gratefully received. (Kept ovaries)

Hi,

I had a hysterectomy in 2000, aged 41 years old, kept ovaries.

Started menopause fully in 2011 and wanted to try to do it without hrt. Put weight on and as a diabetic type 2, then had to go on insulin and put even more weight on, so had to end up having a gastric Bypass in 2013.

My main symptoms are the usual hot flushes, particularly face, neck area. A little anxiety, but HUGE mood swings, if something just slightly niggles me I snap and this is affecting my relationships and my work - i hate it and its not getting any better 7 years later.

So do I continue to rough it out or go to hrt (my gp said he would prescribe). My Mum had heart disease and both my parents died of it. My Mum also had osteoporosis.

As well as diabetes I also have Fibromyalgia. As a teenager when I went on the pill it didn't really agree with me well and I felt my hormones were all over the place. had hyster due to endometriosis.

So in your opinion, would you go on hrt at this stage or try to continue to stay off it?

Thanks
Gill

I’m sorry you are dealing with this. One thing to remember is that HRT isn’t necessarily a long term commitment, if you want to stop after a short time, you can. I kept thinking it was all or nothing but some women are on a shorter time. My GYN went over my symptoms and we decided it was a quality of life decision worth it for me. Honestly I wish my GP would have taken that approach instead of letting me just suffer. So for me, HRT has allowed me to get through my life better. I can’t say if someone else should try it but I’d say discuss it seriously and make your best choice realizing you can stop at a certain age or number of years if you choose, or at any time. Also you might want to look into things like herbals or acupuncture first to see if they help at all, if that approach appeals to you. Also, I was unable to use BCP but have no HRT issues, so it depends on the person. It’s a tough decision. I do advise that if you try it you keep a symptom journal before and during to see the effects. That may help decide if it’s helpful for you. Another option to discuss is low dose antidepressants of some types are used to treat menopause symptoms and some prefer to try them first. It’s a lot to consider, let us know what path you take.
